Sunday 4 September - Gerard Scholten Tuinconcert ┆ a Vrooom Special

This will be this year's only edition taking place at Gerard Scholtenstraat 92 in Rotterdam, featuring music from all over the world, including but not limited to: Brazilian Choro, Swedish Tango, Rock 'n' Roll, and “Dutch Mouses and Slovenian Rabbits”.

The performing musicians:

● Nina Hitz
● Tisa Neža Herlec
● Mia Andresen
● Lukas Simonis
● Floor Polder

Join us and listen to fine music, have a drink and say goodbye to the summer and hello to the next cultural season that -we hope- won't be interrupted with lockdowns and other bad stuff...

┆ NICOLETA CHATZOPOULOU ┆ (GR)
Nicoleta Chatzopoulou is an Athens-based composer, performer, researcher and curator. She focuses on organised sound as well as external musical sources. ┆ MARTIJN COMES ┆ (NL)
Martijn Comes is a Dutch composer with a keen interest in the character of sound found within various musical traditions. Vrooom #88: award-winning baritone saxophone playing, (body) movements and synesthetic experiences of sound, a left hand cutting of the right and the twinkling twitchings in the aftermath. Come, All Ye Faithful.

┆ LOU BARNELL ┆ (UK)

Lou Barnell is a London-born sound, movement and sculpture artist and radio DJ. As a neurodivergent woman who sometimes finds the world alienating and disorientating, Lou uses movement, music and sculpture to communicate her synesthetic experience of sound and to reorientate herself. She wants to use performance to dissolve the cheap packaging of women’s bodies and selves in public life. Lou experiments with her body and shape-shifting re-useable materials such as ice, thermoplastic and wearable sensors to create an intense explosion of sensory experimentation and melting matter. She won the 2021 Oram Awards Supported by The PRS Foundation and The New BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

┆LEFT HAND CUTS OFF THE RIGHT ┆ (UK)
Left Hand Cuts off the Right (Robbie Judkins) is an outlet for exploratory methods and composition. During live performances he plays with bent electronics, acoustic instruments, field recordings, loops and effects. The sounds are of otherworldliness, twinkling twitchings, habitual drones, crackling rhythms and aural oddities. Robbie has created works for the Barbican, ICA, Resonance FM, Turner Contemporary, Cafe Oto, NTS, Whitechapel Gallery, University of Central Lancashire and more. He is also the creator of Animal Sounds (Resonance FM) and Parallax View (Threads Radio).

┆GIUSEPPE DORONZO ┆ (IT)
Guiseppe Doronzo (Barletta, 1987) is an Amsterdam-based composer, sound artist, educator, radio broadcaster, but first and foremost a saxophone player. He focuses his research on the baritone saxophone, aiming for a vocabulary that is informed by his background in contemporary classical music, jazz improvisation and his interest in non-western music. Guiseppe is also known for his many collaborations and projects, including work with dancers and choreographers, and giving workshops. He recently won the Buma music on motion award for 'best original composition' for the music he wrote for the short film "Goya".

It's been nearly two years since we were at Klooster Oude Noorden but we're back up in the north again with Vrooom #87, curated by
Tisa N. Herlec. A smörgåsbord of sound and sensibilities performed by four different local/not so local artists. Come, gather!
facebook event

┆ HYUNJI JUNG┆(KR)

Hyunji Jung is a South Korean sound artist, composer and performer currently based in Rotterdam. Her sonic exploration in modular synthesis focuses on the interaction between tonality and atonality, next to cyclical compositional structure. She studies North Indian classical (Hindustani) music, and is learning singing raga as part of her research. In her performance she will present different renditions of ragas that she has been practicing, using modular synth and her voice. Currently she is working on her first release where she explores seasonal awareness, perceiving sound as agency.

┆URBAN MEGUŠAR┆(SI)
Cellist/improviser Urban Megušar plays across contemporary music, chamber music, free improv, jazz, and folk music; always exploring the possibilities of his instrument. As a member of Trio Tempestoso, he is the winner of Boris Pergamenschikow Preis for Contemporary Chamber Music. In 2018 he released an album with the group Subconscious Rituals. Last year saw the release of the debut of his folk Trio Lumi.

┆BABEurs/044 (Ana Brumat & Henrietta Müller)┆(R'dam)
Ana and Henrietta share a common background in visual arts, having met during their master studies at Piet Zwart Institute. As the artist duo BABEurs/044 they focus on music that comprises low drone frequencies, ambient and subtle noise interventions. Their experimental electronica / improvised set at this Vrooom edition will feature Ana’s self-built string-spring instrument that will lay down a multi-layered tapestry of sound for Henrietta’s distant storytelling.

┆SELF-INDULGENT ASSHOLE┆(R'dam)
According to this asshole (aka the valiant DIY concert organiser and bohemian cafe owner in Carnisse), there's a huge difference between playing music and making music. Self-indulgent asshole does make music AND is playing the music as well.

┆ TISA NEŽA HERLEC & MOJCA ZUPANČIČ┆SI

Tisa Neža Herlec (voice) and Mojca Zupančič (piano) explore different modes of operation in various groups, ensembles and constellations. ┆EGE ŞAHIN┆TR - OutpOur

Ege Şahin is a Rotterdam-based composer and sound artist from Istanbul who makes experimental music with an heterogeneous approach to aesthetics and attitude. His solo live project 'OutpOur' is an interpretation of modular synthesis as an ever-changing organism, where immersive sound worlding merges with live processed vocals like a fish in a whirlpool.

┆ VO EZN┆GE

Vo Ezn is a multidisciplinary sound artist who, in her own words, works on "server-side tensions and sassy/introverted interfaces ][ figuring out the tools for-to knowledge-sharing / opting-out / autonomy ][ --to-for-by-with on my own terms".

┆MOTHERS OF EXIT┆NL

Dutch veterans Gert-Jan Prins and Lukas Simonis recently recorded and released their first album together under the moniker 'Mothers of Exit'. The crunching, playful seven cuts on this record are exemplary of the music that will be played during this stream; something inbetween gritty improv jazz and minimal noise rock, using electronics, guitars, modular synths, percussive elements and effects.

Vrooom special with a surprise visit from a fully-vaccinated Asmus Tietchens, which nicely makes up for our cancelled edition in March last year. Asmus Tietchens is a living legend of German electronic avant-garde music.
Then there's another Cantos Deus "-extended" show, where the choirboys will dive into the topic of Christian anarchism alongside special guests Lucija Gregov & Tisa Herlec.
Take note: this will be our first time at the new New Grounds venue, the monumental former school building.

┆ASMUS TIETCHENS┆de
Asmus Tietchens (1947) is one of the most important and unique figures in non-academic electronic music and sound manipulation. The Hamburg-based composer has made more than 80 albums worldwide and has collaborated with many different sound artists. His music draws on various musical genres; electronic (both high and low-brow), minimalism and classic. In 1980 he released his first solo album "Nachtstücke", followed by a series of albums containing rhythmic and harmonic music for the renowned Sky label ("Biotop", "Spät Europa", etc.). These fairly melodic synth tunes almost seem an abberation in light of the later shift towards 'industrial', as first witnessed on "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" (1984, United Diaries) and the meticulous sound manipulations he is known for today. Tietchens continues to explore the posibilities of specific sound sources (ranging from water sounds to pure sine wave tones). His work is rooted in a deeply sceptic gesture and inspired by philosopher E.M. Cioran, who is often quoted on his album covers. Tietchens has been awarded with the prestigious Karl Sczuka Prize of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) twice.

┆CANTOS DEUS feat. special guests LUCIJA GREGOV & TISA HERLEC int'l
This summer sees "Christian No Wave band" Cantos Deus play a small series of shows based on the historical and societal theme Christian Anarchism. Cantos Deus is a collaboration between theologist/performer Jacco Weener and
Rotterdam underground artists Bruno Ferro Xavier Da Silva and Lukas Simonis. As a trio they attempt to make a statement about the language and musical expression of religion.
For each of these shows, they invite two artists to create a performance together around this theme. For this show the invitees are Tisa Neza Herlec and Lucija Gregov.
Lucija Gregov is a Croatian cellist, improviser and artist whose work explores and describes new sonic landscapes. Adding to her instrumental cello practice, she integrates analogue synthesizers and processed field recordings to her compositions.
Tisa N. Herlec is a Slovenian vocalist who plays with language and imagination. She is active in a variety of media;  writing, improvising, speaking, organizing, painting and assembling - preferably collectively.

For the first time since February we're back at our familiar spot in Rotterdam Noord; the fine Kapelzaal of Klooster Oude Noorden. Tonight's triple bill of electro-acoustic delicacies features Alex and George's brilliant Able Noise, the slow build-up musique concrète gubbins of Mark Smith (aka the Sunshine Lounge), and Linus B' electronica feast.
This is a 'reservation only' show. Please send a PM to our facebook account (Vrooom or Sandwich Island) or contact: info[at]sandwich-island[dot]com.

┆ABLE NOISE┆int'l
Able Noise is an experimental baritone guitar and drum duo, based between The Hague and Athens. Through the use of voices, tapes and alternative methods of playing their instruments, the duo create a somewhat minimal but really captivating performance. Taken as a whole, the feel of their sound reminds us of Chicago post-rock stalwarts Gastr del Sol, and that is no mean feat.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKCPQ_3nR18

┆THE SUNSHINE LOUNGE┆sct/nl
The Glasgow born, Dutch resident Mark Smith is a music maker, radio DJ, concert promoter, and Jerry Sadowitz fan. His solo-project Sunshine Lounge plows a furrow between relaxation and lime cordial, elephants and violence, green and polkadots, Penelope Keith and chaos. In his live sets, Mark uses home made instruments, electromagnetic chunder and acoustic gubbins.
https://thesunshinelounge.bandcamp.com

┆LINUS B┆roffa
Linus B is a producer, DJ and visual artist who finds his inspiration in the arbitrariness of daily life. Mending and bending recorded samples of the things around him, his music is an auditive feast, a celebration and happy estrangement of the everyday. There is room for tenderness, kitsch, and a bit of confusion.
