Curated by Tisa N. Herlec, Vrooom #92 is going to be a journey into the world of languages and their possible forms. Ceramic puppets living in a magical narrative, tongues twisting, cryptolects and poems, music from the depths of repatriated archives, softwares giving speeches.

South African artists Thabiso Nkoana and Pule kaJanolitji come together for the month of December in a Pro Helvetica residence in Zรผrich to develop their shared practices in poetry, music and spoken word. During this time they will also visit Rotterdam to engage in a sound studio residency at WORM. At Vrooom they'll present a performed work-in-progress, as developed in their residencies.
• Thabiso Nkoana is a poet, music producer and musicologist. As a musicologist he focuses on the digital repatriation of African music from archives, for the benefit of communities of origin and African artists in general.

• Pule kaJanolitji is a scholar of linguistics and a cultural historian of speech practices, promoting writing systems of the African continent, like the N'Ko or Ditema tsa Dinoko script. His MA research describes South African cryptolects, which are secret forms of speech. Here's a video of Pule Welch as a verbal artist:

Ilya Ziblat Shay is a NL-based composer, sound artist and a researcher. His work combines interactive computer systems and live performance, exploring sound and structure with an experimental approach and an understanding of music as a co-authored and a collective process. Searching for new means of expression that can reach beyond the purely musical, Ilya approaches current world issues with a critical view and tries to map technological, political, and ethical questions as augmented musical narratives.

Tisa N. Herlec vocalizes, communicates, organizes, writes, performs and creates imaginaries (with sound, voice, in texts and images). Her "Tongue-twisters and other linguistic anomalies" is a performance for language and its adjacent sounds, vocalized in an intuitive, and yet at times rigid tongue-twisting composition. This performance is a release of Tisa's newest piece supported by the Stichting Droom en Daad.

Saturday 26 November - Vrooom #91: Disturbo F., Piyojo, Marwan Ai Anaki

Vrooom #91

┆ DISTURBO FRESCO PUTTANESCO SOLARI
┆ PIYOJO
┆ MARWAN AI ANAKI

location: Klooster Oude Noorden – Ruivenstraat 81, Rotterdam
doors: 20:00 / start: 20:30 / end: 23:00 / €10
facebook event

Vrooom #91 features the improbable assemblage of Disturbo F. - the "last chance music/cut wave" band from Oostende, the electronic miniatures of Piyojo, and the audiovisual Marwan Ai Anaki show. Curated by Sandwich Island / S. Roth.

┆ DISTURBO FRESCO PUTTANESCO SOLARI ┆ (BE)
We've recently watched this band slowly self-combust over the course of their live performance. The almost constant taunting between two band members and the improbability of the band's music made for a tense and bewildering experience; something that has been sorely missing in recent years. Their "last chance music/cut wave" description fits the bill quite nicely.

┆ PIYOJO ┆ (NL)
Rik Mรถhlmann makes electronic music as Piyojo. The Dutch artist uses his eccentric and inquisitive approach to music to make songs that don't necessarily behave in a narrative way. Instead, his tracks expose themselves like little paintings.
https://soundcloud.com/piyojo

┆ MARWAN AI ANAKI ┆ (R'dam)
Born in Baghdad, raised in Bucharest and blossoming in Rotterdam. Loves truncating images, smearing virtual paint in latent spaces, building cheerful game machines and refreshing media salads. At Vrooom #91, Marwan will present "3 X 3"; an audio performance, exploring sound and visuals through the lenses of 3 participants + a collection of sounds & images that are trained via an algorithm.

Vrooom #90: sounds from the forests. Cello, guitar, keys, and violin playing. Poetry, improvisation, electroacoustic, and indie. Three live sets with eight different artists performing together in various iterations. Curated by Lukas Simonis.

┆ KLEEFSTRA BROS & MICHAล JACASZEK
(NL/PL) – 'IT DEEL I', with special guests Anne Bakker & Nina Hitz
This live show presents the 'IT DEEL I' project initiated by The Kleefstra brothers, in collaboration with Popfabryk in Leeuwarden, a culmination of a multi-day residency with electroacoustic music composer, producer and sound artist Michaล‚ Jacaszek from Gdansk, Poland. The Kleefstra Brothers are poet Jan and guitarist Romke, who are also known for their involvement in e.g. Piiptsjilling, The Alvaret Ensemble, CMKK, and Tsjinlรปd. Using poetry, music and film, they want to create awareness of the universal connection between man and nature. They reflect on the theme of environmental degradation, in particular with regard to the Frisian landscape and the Oranjewoud. The Kleefstra Bros: “Trees are pre-eminently the example of life forms that are predestinated to a fixed place. This spot is where they have to survive. For tens, to hundreds of years they are bound to this specific spot, surrender to it. With untouchable patience, many of the trees in Oranjewoud (an old forest in Friesland) have seen many generations of people pass by. But still we claim as if we can decide over their lives and let them suffer with all our interventions in their environment."

┆ PIETRO FIGRATO & LUCIJA GREGOV ┆ (HR/IT)
Pietro Frigato is a guitarist, composer, improviser and teacher from Italy, currently based in Rotterdam. He focuses on the concept of borders in music, the edge of perceptions, and the distortion and compression of the signal as a poetic, aesthetic and conceptual tool. Since 2018, he has been the artistic director of the Cataclisma Improvisation Festival.
Lucija Gregov is a Rotterdam-based cellist, improviser and sound artist from Croatia. She has been developing projects in the field of classical, electroacoustic and experimental music, as well as noise, improvisation, radio/sound art, and community art. Through interdisciplinary collaborations, she seeks to push the boundaries of traditional cello playing.

┆ ZEA + OSCAR JAN HOOGLAND
(NL)
Zea (the solo project of singer/guitarist Arnold de Boer; see also: The Ex) plays together with improvising electric clavichord wizard Oscar Jan Hoogland. Oscar is adding (or opposing, if you will) a unique sound to Zea’s signature songwriting, which makes their music as a duo tense, erratic, bold and high-spirited. Their recently released collaboration album "Summing" is the result of a series of back-and-forth invitations, between indie and impro.

┆ NICOLETA CHATZOPOULOU ┆ (GR)
Nicoleta Chatzopoulou is an Athens-based composer, performer, researcher and curator. She focuses on organised sound as well as external musical sources. ┆ MARTIJN COMES ┆ (NL)
Martijn Comes is a Dutch composer with a keen interest in the character of sound found within various musical traditions. Most of his work gravitates towards electroacoustic composition, with some of his harmonies described sounding as if they were exhumed from the dregs of harsh noise, and others having an almost extraterrestrial quality.

Vrooom #88: award-winning baritone saxophone playing, (body) movements and synesthetic experiences of sound, a left hand cutting of the right and the twinkling twitchings in the aftermath. Come, All Ye Faithful.

┆ LOU BARNELL ┆ (UK)

Lou Barnell is a London-born sound, movement and sculpture artist and radio DJ. As a neurodivergent woman who sometimes finds the world alienating and disorientating, Lou uses movement, music and sculpture to communicate her synesthetic experience of sound and to reorientate herself. She wants to use performance to dissolve the cheap packaging of women’s bodies and selves in public life. Lou experiments with her body and shape-shifting re-useable materials such as ice, thermoplastic and wearable sensors to create an intense explosion of sensory experimentation and melting matter. She won the 2021 Oram Awards Supported by The PRS Foundation and The New BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

┆LEFT HAND CUTS OFF THE RIGHT ┆ (UK)
Left Hand Cuts off the Right (Robbie Judkins) is an outlet for exploratory methods and composition. During live performances he plays with bent electronics, acoustic instruments, field recordings, loops and effects. The sounds are of otherworldliness, twinkling twitchings, habitual drones, crackling rhythms and aural oddities. Robbie has created works for the Barbican, ICA, Resonance FM, Turner Contemporary, Cafe Oto, NTS, Whitechapel Gallery, University of Central Lancashire and more. He is also the creator of Animal Sounds (Resonance FM) and Parallax View (Threads Radio).

┆GIUSEPPE DORONZO ┆ (IT)
Guiseppe Doronzo (Barletta, 1987) is an Amsterdam-based composer, sound artist, educator, radio broadcaster, but first and foremost a saxophone player. He focuses his research on the baritone saxophone, aiming for a vocabulary that is informed by his background in contemporary classical music, jazz improvisation and his interest in non-western music. Guiseppe is also known for his many collaborations and projects, including work with dancers and choreographers, and giving workshops. He recently won the Buma music on motion award for 'best original composition' for the music he wrote for the short film "Goya".

┆ HYUNJI JUNG┆(KR)

Hyunji Jung is a South Korean sound artist, composer and performer currently based in Rotterdam. Her sonic exploration in modular synthesis focuses on the interaction between tonality and atonality, next to cyclical compositional structure. She studies North Indian classical (Hindustani) music, and is learning singing raga as part of her research. In her performance she will present different renditions of ragas that she has been practicing, using modular synth and her voice. Currently she is working on her first release where she explores seasonal awareness, perceiving sound as agency.

┆URBAN MEGUล AR┆(SI)
Cellist/improviser Urban Meguลกar plays across contemporary music, chamber music, free improv, jazz, and folk music; always exploring the possibilities of his instrument. As a member of Trio Tempestoso, he is the winner of Boris Pergamenschikow Preis for Contemporary Chamber Music. In 2018 he released an album with the group Subconscious Rituals. Ana and Henrietta share a common background in visual arts, having met during their master studies at Piet Zwart Institute. As the artist duo BABEurs/044 they focus on music that comprises low drone frequencies, ambient and subtle noise interventions. Their experimental electronica / improvised set at this Vrooom edition will feature Ana’s self-built string-spring instrument that will lay down a multi-layered tapestry of sound for Henrietta’s distant storytelling.

┆SELF-INDULGENT ASSHOLE┆(R'dam)
According to this asshole (aka the valiant DIY concert organiser and bohemian cafe owner in Carnisse), there's a huge difference between playing music and making music. Self-indulgent asshole does make music AND is playing the music as well.
