HIEROGLYPHIC BEING (us)- Live
Hieroglyphic Being is the alias of American techno producer Jamal R.
Moss. Operating from Chicago, he naturally draws from that city’s
dominant and enervating dance culture. Moss, however, looks both inwards
and outwards to bring a richer, more sophisticated edge to his
productions. Elusive but accessible, his music mixes elements of
industrial jazz, rhythmic noise and cosmic house to dizzying effect.
Jamal Moss has spent more than twenty years in the electronic underworld
of Chicago and this rich experience has created his unique sound.

ASSEL (nl / anus records)
A maker of bruising, jarring techno, Assel is a promising electronica
artist who caught our attention with his debut 10” vinyl (recently
released on Anus Records). And just like that young (though growing)
Rotterdam based label, Assel has a healthy preference for choosing
untrodden sonic paths; always on the lookout for new angles to create
his music from. Clone compared him to Tuff Sherm, and we might add a
little Powell into the mix.
https://soundcloud.com/assel83-1
PAUL DU LAC (nl / bio rhythm)
Rotterdam based Paul du Lac started DJing in the early nineties. He
became a key figure in the Dutch electronica underground; shunning the
limelight to concentrate on his internationally respected Bio Rhythm
record label and to craft rough jacking house/techno tracks. At the core
of his output are his relentless - and highly esoteric - DJ sets;
fluidly incorporating anything from mutant house, techno/electro noir
and wave. We expect a more industrial / EBM-ish direction on this night.

PARRISH SMITH (nl)
Describing Parrish Smith can be quite a task, given the elusive nature
of his music. But that's also why he finds himself as part of tonight's
line up. Beginning his musical odyssey as teenage metal and rock fan,
Parrish Smith gradually developed a taste for harsh sounds. In his
"forbidding" but elegant DJ sets he will not look to manage
expectations, but allow the tracks dictate the course (not the other way
around). Stick with him until the end and you'll be in for one
refreshing rush.

VROOOM's Shred-o-mat with: Philipp Ernsting, Red Brut, Henk Bakr, Gonçalo Almeida, Lukas Simonis
The (music) video 'shred' is a cultural phenomenon, arguably based on
the flashy, fast metalized guitar playing (= shredding). It has taken on
its own life in recent years. Artists from a wide variety of
backgrounds are re-hashing and reinterpreting existing music videos and
other things; spoofs of Steve Vai's smug live-in-concert noodling or
reharmonizations of crazy people ranting. There's even musicless music
videos; a playground for bastardized sound design. The shred can
manifest itself in many different alternate takes. Together with the
local artists of tonite's line up we will pick a few videos that will be
tossed into the shredder for some improvised live treatment!
GOODIEPAL with DANIEL S. BØTCHER, GRØN, NYNNE ROBERTA PEDERSEN
Goodiepal is a controversial Danish/Faroese musician/composer whose
long list of antics are rooted in his oddbal artistic output. He does
performances and lectures (on the future of computer music, his own
compositional practices and resonance computing). From 2004 till 2008 he
was the head of the electronic music department and a teacher at DIEM
(Danish Institute for Electro-acoustic Music) at the Royal Academy of
Music in Aarhus, Denmark. He is the author of two books: “Radical
Computer Music & Fantastisk Mediemanipulation” and “El Camino Del
Hardcore – Rejsen Til Nordens Indre”. He travelled very long distances
only using his home-made cabin bike named 'Kommunal Klon Komputer 2',
providing electric power during concerts with the help of its dynamo
system. His international tours included 150 universities. Goodiepal has
given away money and most of his belongings; in 2011 he published an
'album object' containing a 500 Danish Crowns note, and sold it for 250
Danish Crowns. During the 2012 edition of the Transmediale fest,
Goodiepal shipped his belongings over and subsequently gave them away;
dubbed as the 'MORT AUX VACHES EKSTRA EXTRA – THE GIVE AWAY!'
performance.
Tonight's show sees him joining forces with
Daniel S. Bøtcher + Grøn + Nynne Roberta Pedersen Pedersen for a set
described by Goodiepal himself as "Scandinavian Nordic Dreamy Synth
Music". But knowing him, it will probably be much more than that!

VROOOM RECCOMENDATION!
The continuation of the unique event series for original (pop)music
culture & art made on German soil. In previous years cult acts like PALAIS SCHAUMBURG, BODENSTÄNDIG 2000, DER PLAN, CHRIS IMLER, and ECHO KRANK all found their way to ‘Ein Abend In WORM’. This should be enough of an indication to save this date! With kind support from Goethe-Institut Niederlande.

ASMUS TIETCHENS
Hamburg based Avantgarde composer Asmus Tietchens is one of the most
important figures in non-academic electronic music and sound
manipulation. Since the early 70s he has published more than 70 albums
worldwide and collaborated with many
notable sound artists. Asmus Tietchens' music draws on various musical
genres; classical, electronic (both high and low-brow), minimalism,
process music, all inform his sensibility. His sounds are both
analytical and emotional, with a strong sensivity for the sources being
used. The light rhythmic and melodic synth tunes from the early 80s
almost seem an abberation in light of his later shift towards meticulous
sound manipulations. To this day, Asmus Tietchens is actively releasing
music, and spends the rest of the time being a theoretician, and music
teacher.
http://www.tietchens.de/
DJ ZIPO
Asmus Tietchens' performance will be expertly complimented by the
electronic bricolage of DJ Zipo aka Till Kniola. He is also the main
editor / curator of the Aufabwegen Magazine and label, which ranks as
one of the most comprehensive, long running Fanzine-turned-Magazines,
covering all things Post-Industrial, Ambient, Noise, and
'Geräuschmusik'. Aufabwegen published a monography on Asmus Tietchens in
1998, alongside a number of cd releases. For his part, Tietchens also
contributes to Aufabwegen Magazine.

TRANSPORT
Transport is a young, very energetic band from the Ruhrgebiet,
featuring instrumentalist Nils Herzogenrath, drummer Niklas Wandt (both
also involved in German psychedelic pop group Ωracles / Oracles),
and electronic composer Edis Ludwig. Drawing on early electronic music,
Minimal, and the German Kosmische Musik of the 1970s specifically,
Transport’s rocking improvisations are built around the slow and
hypnotic variation of steady, Motorik drum and bass pulses, bursting
into etheric synthesizer washes. Think Can’s “Mother Sky”, Ashra’s “New
Age Of Earth” and Boredoms’ “Vision Creation New Sun” rolled into one
tight sounding unit!
https://youtu.be/jJICkNMdjGo
DJ's TESK, VOMIT HEAT & FRANCO
Following Amus and Zipo, The Transporters will also be your DJ hosts
into the night, presenting a very tasty cocktail of Kraut / Dub / Afro /
Kosmische Elektronische Musik, and a pinch of skewed disco.
MENEER VAN NU – visuals
Meneer van Nu learned the craftsmanship of moving images in the early
2000 in the clubs of Berlin. Based in NL since 2004, he currently
accompanies several live projects; from free jazz to speed metal or
abstract electronics, with sound-interactive visuals, around Europe.

We're excited about the VROOOM initiation rite at the
brand new Post Office headquarters, sandwiched right between Annabel and the Schieblock. This will be an evening dedicated to
mindblowing performances by Eli Gras and Frédéric Le Junter, with their
unique self-built instruments topped off with SK Kakraba's first live
appearance in Rotterdam. Added ftw bonus: this new venue is the former
Masonic lodge of Rotterdam.
date: Thursday, November 26
location: Post Office / Pink Pank – Delftsestraat 9, Rotterdam
doors: 20:30 / start: 20:30 / entrance: €6
FRÉDÉRIC LE JUNTER (fr)
Frederic began to construct his unique instruments with found objects in 1984; a bizarre, partly
mechanical assemblage of strings, winds and percussions. Little by
little he managed to formulate a singular vocabulary of sounds that
inspired him to consider music as landscape. Frederic presents his
machines in the shape of 'automatic facilities' in exhibition centres
and concert venues alike, giving partly improvised concerts.
http://flejunter.free.fr/
ELI GRAS (es)
Self-taught artist who has travelled a long musical path, from
experimental to electropop, via Greek music, minimalism, folk, choral
music, noise, etc. Eli's performance is based on experimental
improvisation, using a portable set of instruments that she designed and
built; sound plants, string-sequencer, bounce harp and prepared guitar.
She has performed with many artists around Europe (Hans-Joachim
Roedelius, Alain Wergifosse, etc.), and is founder / director of the
NoNoLogic Festival (Spain) and the La Olla Expréss record label, and
occasionally does workshops, and lectures.

SK KAKRABA (gh / Awesome Tapes From Africa)
Sk Kakraba was born in Saru, a small farming community in the northern
region of Ghana, which is known for its many great xylophone players.
His uncle, Kakraba Lobi, was one of the first gyil players to tour,
lecture and record internationally. Sk Kakraba undertook traditional
training in xylophone from a young age. Later, he was brought to Accra
by his uncle to work as a performer and instructor at the International
Center for African Music at the University of Ghana. From 2000, SK began
touring internationally, performing in Jordan, Switzerland, and seven
African countries. In 2002, he released his first recording “Gandayina:
Xylophone Music of Ghana” (Pentatonic Press). In 2012 SK relocated to
Los Angeles and began working with local musicians to create a new blend
of traditional and modern music. He also began performing for children
in schools and giving workshops to American music teachers. He is
currently working on a book with Doug Goodkin of Gyil music adaptable to
Orff instruments.

NZZN
(North-South-South-North) is a 3-day festival initiated by DE PLAYER
and VROOOM, organised in collaboration with other Rotterdam-based
organisations / venues that operate on the fringes of the Rotterdam
subculture; Koffie & Ambacht (Le Sud), MiMa, Poortgebouw,
foundation B.a.d, PAE, Noodlebar, Roodkapje, Wolfart Projectspace, De
Nieuwe Ruimte.
The festival highlights the network that is
flourishing between these platforms; not merely to cement and
emphasize the common grounds, but also to celebrate the creative
nucleus. The small-scaled, decentralized events that take place in
characteristic and sometimes unusual locations, are particularly
beneficial for a lively, diverse cultural climate; just outside the
defined city centre borders there is plenty of room for risktaking,
experimentation and adventure.
NZZN seeks to map out and
showcase this peripheral Rotterdam of leftfield music, sound art,
improvisation, and performance art with a vibrant mix of
international and local artists. The festival takes places in various
locations in the North and South of Rotterdam, in walking distance
between the locations.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
TASHI
DORJI (Bhutan / us)
Guitarist from Bhutan, on the
eastern side of the Himalayas. Now residing in North Carolina, Dorji
developed a style unbound by tradition. His improvisations grow along
surprising paths, dragging the listener into a labyrinth of warbling
tones. The experience is one equally disorienting and reflective, in
which Dorji’s musicianship brings haunting beauty and mindfulness
to the listener. Last year Dorji released his debut LP through Hermit
Hut, the label of Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance). Think: Bill
Orcutt, Derek Bailey, and Jack Rose.

PAK
YAN LAU (be / hk)
Pak Yan Lau is an artist born in
Belgium, with origins from Hong Kong. Her love for curious sounding
objects, toys, and toy pianos in particular, is demonstrated in her
delicate sound mosaics. For the occasion of NZZN, Pak Yan will be
presenting her piece 'Book of Toy'; a solo composition for four toy
piano's, pendules, and electronics.
http://pakyanlau.com/
FLUWELEN
KOORD (be)
These four No Wave dandies prefer playing
with their flutes over wetting their brushes in their painting
studios. Fluwelen Koord is one of the latest additions in the Ultra
Eczema camp; Belgium's backbone for unclassifiable music / sound art.
Basically, this is a bunch of ill-bred art students being caught with
their pants down, trying to channel their weird and wonderfully crude
sound to the audience as good as they can.

TOM
WHITE (uk)
The work of Tom White (London) traverses
multi-media platforms including sound, experimental film and video,
installation and live performance. He has exhibited and performed
internationally and published many sound works since 2009 (on e.g.
Chocolate Monk, Alien Passengers). In 2014 he won the British
Composer Award in Sonic Art for his piece 'Public Address',
commissioned by the South London
Gallery.

ZENO
VAN DEN BROEK (nl)
The work of mister Van Den Broek
revolves around space, spatiality and time. He uses Audio/Video to
influence space and spatial awareness, both in a tactile and mental
way. Zeno's output is released through albums, installations,
paintings, and live
performances.

MANY
OTHERS (it/fr)
Neapolitan drums & guitar duo founded
by Francesco Gregoretti and Oliver di Placido, where guitar and drums
often reverse roles. Oliver created a new hybrid guitar, with an
unfixed neck and moving pick-up. Contact microphones are used for
primitive realtime sound processing, blurring the lines between
composition and improvisation, further intensified by explosive blast
beats and complex polyhrythms.

SASKIA
VENEGAS (es) w/
• Panos Gklistis (piano)
• Robin Eggers (percussion)
• Timoteo Carbone (electronics)
Saskia Venegas is a Rotterdam based classically trained Spanish/Belgian
violinist, and music theatre maker, who is not afraid to take part in a
wide variety of musical ensembles; from Symphonic and Chamber
Orchestras to interdisciplinary performances. She works with visual
artists, dancers, and actors.

MERCEDES AZPILICUETA (ar/it)
Visual artist,
poet, and performer, currently in residency at the Rijksakademie.
Language, the body and the voice – departing from her own peculiar
resources and obsessions – are three things that often define her
work; resulting in (video) performances, poetry readings and
exhibitions.

FCKN
BSTRDS (nl)
Cult junk noise tribe risen from the cultural
wasteland in the northern regions of suburban Netherlands. Their live
shows are seizure-like manifestations of disorder with its members
clad as rubbish heap vagrants.
http://www.fcknbstrds.com/
HUIB
EMMER (nl)
Rotterdam based composer informed by 20th
century avant-garde music and early techno. His gritty instrumental
electronic pieces and A/V projects have been performed by many
ensembles, soloists, and orchestras.
http://huibemmer.com/
KUBUS
(nl)
Producer behind some of the most upfront and
extraordinary NL hiphop productions to appear throughout the last
decade. Kubus' roots go back to the early rave days, where raw
analogue beats and brutal electronics melted together into something
unheard of. In this light it's no surprise that his current style is
a unique fusion of techno, electro, and hiphop. He experiments with
modular- and hardware synths, in constant search of new, wicked
sounds.
https://soundcloud.com/kubusvonkubus
MARIËTTE
ROUPPE VAN DER VOORT (nl)
Dutch saxophonist and flutist.
Formerly active as initiator and musician for various projects in the
composed and improvised music field during the eighties and nineties.
She played with the electro-acoustic group Byte and formed a duo with
Ab Baars. The piece that she made for NZZN consists of a song cycle
inspired by excerpts of Kafka's 'The Burrow' and will be executed by
Mariëtte and cellist Nina Hitz.
YANN GOURDON (fr)
Hurdy-gurdy player, composer, and sound artist Yann Gourdon looks
at vibratory fields and sound perception as a medium. He focuses
mainly on acoustic phenomena that have a dynamic relationship with
their environment. Every aspect of his work deals with quality of
sound. It's not a matter of an event between spectators and a
musician, it's 'a space to submit to a
process.'
http://ygourdon.net/
KENT
TANKRED (se)
Hailing from Stockholm, Kent Tankred is a
prominent name in sound art. He has been the president of the
Fylkingen society between 1993-98, forms Sons of God with Leif
Elggren, and has participated worldwide in the 'Freq Out' project of
Carl Michael von Hausswolff. He is known for his circuit bent
instruments that are represented in the form of collages, sound
installations and recordings. Kent's self-built apparatus will be an
integral part of his NZZN live show. Coinciding with his peformarnce,
DE PLAYER will be presenting a new limited Kent Tankred record as
part of their 'Pour Vous'
series.

MADROTTER
(nl) – DJ
Dutch crate digger who has been living in a
village outside Bandung, Indonesia for the last twenty years. He
curates the amazing music blog linked below; chock full of great
music from across Indonesia. Madrotter will spin many of his found
treasures for the first time ever in Rotterdam: Jaipong (popular
Indonesian dance music), early Dangut, Takdiran, bits of post-punk,
etc.

LIGHT
PAINTING – project w/ John Giskes (nl) & Michal Osowski (pl) &
Ingrun Schnitzler (nl)
'Light Painting' is a newly
developed technique where the light of small lamps in motion are
recorded, stored, and transformed into a video projection that
creates a brief visual experience. Various images are mixed up
gradually into a dynamic and unpredictable narrative. The video
images are generated by a performer who mimics specific motion
patterns with these lamps attached to her/him.

PANTROPICAL x VROOOM @ Roodkapje

- LOS PIRAÑAS (co)
- DICK EL DEMASIADO (nl/ar)
- DØG (br/nl)

entrance: 7 euro
Location: Roodkapje - Teilingerstraat 128
https://www.facebook.com/events/913259352078611/
With heavy support from Vrooom, and this time at lovely Roodkapje
Rot(t)terdam, Pantropical is proud to present the first ever concert of
the magnificent Colombian trio Los Pirañas on Dutch soil, and a special
live set of Dick El Demasiado with local musicians!
■ LOS PIRAÑAS (co)
This band is formed by the holy trinity of Colombian tropical music
innovators. Its members are known for their highly creative output:
guitarist Eblis Álvarez is the frontman of the inimitable MERIDIAN
BROTHERS, bassist Mario Galeano did
tireless crusader work in cumbia scenes spanning South America, and
leads FRENTE CUMBIERO, and ONDATROPICA, and drummer Pedro Ojeda also has
his own stellar band called ROMPERAYO. These guys have been exposed to
Latin American tropical music culture for about two decades and fused
their combined experience into Los Pirañas; an instrumental encounter
between cumbia, champeta, african sounds (like Konono's distorted
trance), surf, and rock. This is the Southamerican psychedelic sound of
the XXI Century!
https://www.facebook.com/lospiranasmusica
http://lospiranas.bandcamp.com/
■ DICK EL DEMASIADO y su conjunto patatas (nl/ar)
El Demasiado is also known as Dick Verdult: independent filmmaker,
visual artist, and radiomaker. At the turn of the millennium his focus
started to shift towards music. He then branched out to the Southern
Hemisphere and developed his experimental “cumbia lunática” in
Argentina, became an underground pop Icon in South America, and now
still makes culos quiver to his angular style. For this Pantropical
edition, Dick will team up with Rotterdam locals to flesh out an as of
yet unseen version of his live show. Percussionist Chris Bruining from
Gallowstreet, and La Banda Fantástica is one of the musicians joining
him.
http://www.dickeldemasiado.com/
■ DØG (br/nl)
Brazilian DØG divides his time in Holland between geeking out with A/V
installations (as 'ehCaetano'), and über-dancable DJ sessions. He will
serve up a high-octane mix of funk carioca, tecno brega, brazilian bass.
Heavy beats from the south american suburbs of the planet.

free French sax and Dutch drums explorations by Cathy Heyden &
Rogier Smal. This time at Wolfart, check it out & enjoy!

■ CATHY HEYDEN & ROGIER SMAL DUO
Parisian Cathy Heyden is an autodidact sax improviser who keeps true to
her own ideas, performing all over the world with musicians, dancers,
comedians, poets: Faust, Ganguru, Geoff Leigh, etcetera. Originally a
hardcore/punk drummer, Rogier Small's quest for liberty brought him to
places far beyond. He has been fortunate to play with artists from an
ever expanding musical spectrum; from Earth's Dylan Carlson to Sun Ra's
Marshall Allen.
http://rogiersmal.blogspot.nl/
http://cathy.heyden.free.fr/
■ KOMOREBI (jp)
Komorebi is a duo consisting of Shizuku Aosaki and Morihide Sawada.
They combine drums, harp and vocals in an unusual way, and with great
attention to detail. Sawada started playing drums in various bands circa
1980 and collaborated with biggies such as Faust, Damo Suzuki, Chris
Cutler, and Keiji Haino. Like the delicate celtic harp playing of his
music partner Aosaki, Sawada's music is strongly influenced by
traditional folk music and minimalism. Komorebi's music as a unit is
never really unsettling or really calm, but rather somewhere inbetween.
http://www.snaredrumsolo.com/
http://www.shizukuaosaki.com/
■ ALAN GUNGA PURVES / MARK ALBAN LOTZ (de/uk/nl)
The pairing of flutes and drums might be one of the oldest musical
combinations ever, tried and tested on many battlefields, now revived in
a new and exciting form by this duo. Multi-flautist Mark and
self-proclaimed “squeekologist” and percussionist Alan are true
individualists on top of their game. Both expatriates (Germany and
Scotland respectively) live and work in the Netherlands, refining their
skills in the Amsterdam music scene, creating unique sound palettes of
their own.
