┆ TISA NEŽA HERLEC & MOJCA ZUPANČIČ┆SI

Tisa Neža Herlec (voice) and Mojca Zupančič (piano) explore different modes of operation in various groups, ensembles and constellations. Their combined experiences come together in their own sonic practice. They constitute a dynamic improvising duo who strive for the immersion into a mutual present; a real-time generative performative practice and communication.

┆EGE ŞAHIN┆TR - OutpOur

Ege Şahin is a Rotterdam-based composer and sound artist from Istanbul who makes experimental music with an heterogeneous approach to aesthetics and attitude. His solo live project 'OutpOur' is an interpretation of modular synthesis as an ever-changing organism, where immersive sound worlding merges with live processed vocals like a fish in a whirlpool.

┆ VO EZN┆GE

Vo Ezn is a multidisciplinary sound artist who, in her own words, works on "server-side tensions and sassy/introverted interfaces ][ figuring out the tools for-to knowledge-sharing / opting-out / autonomy ][ --to-for-by-with on my own terms".

┆MOTHERS OF EXIT┆NL

Dutch veterans Gert-Jan Prins and Lukas Simonis recently recorded and released their first album together under the moniker 'Mothers of Exit'. The crunching, playful seven cuts on this record are exemplary of the music that will be played during this stream; something inbetween gritty improv jazz and minimal noise rock, using electronics, guitars, modular synths, percussive elements and effects.

Vrooom special with a surprise visit from a fully-vaccinated Asmus Tietchens, which nicely makes up for our cancelled edition in March last year. Asmus Tietchens is a living legend of German electronic avant-garde music.
Then there's another Cantos Deus "-extended" show, where the choirboys will dive into the topic of Christian anarchism alongside special guests Lucija Gregov & Tisa Herlec.
Take note: this will be our first time at the new New Grounds venue, the monumental former school building.

┆ASMUS TIETCHENS┆de
Asmus Tietchens (1947) is one of the most important and unique figures in non-academic electronic music and sound manipulation. The Hamburg-based composer has made more than 80 albums worldwide and has collaborated with many different sound artists. His music draws on various musical genres; electronic (both high and low-brow), minimalism and classic. In 1980 he released his first solo album "Nachtstücke", followed by a series of albums containing rhythmic and harmonic music for the renowned Sky label ("Biotop", "Spät Europa", etc.). These fairly melodic synth tunes almost seem an abberation in light of the later shift towards 'industrial', as first witnessed on "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" (1984, United Diaries) and the meticulous sound manipulations he is known for today. Tietchens continues to explore the posibilities of specific sound sources (ranging from water sounds to pure sine wave tones). His work is rooted in a deeply sceptic gesture and inspired by philosopher E.M. Cioran, who is often quoted on his album covers. Tietchens has been awarded with the prestigious Karl Sczuka Prize of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) twice.

┆CANTOS DEUS feat. special guests LUCIJA GREGOV & TISA HERLEC int'l
This summer sees "Christian No Wave band" Cantos Deus play a small series of shows based on the historical and societal theme Christian Anarchism. Cantos Deus is a collaboration between theologist/performer Jacco Weener and
Rotterdam underground artists Bruno Ferro Xavier Da Silva and Lukas Simonis. As a trio they attempt to make a statement about the language and musical expression of religion.
For each of these shows, they invite two artists to create a performance together around this theme. For this show the invitees are Tisa Neza Herlec and Lucija Gregov.
Lucija Gregov is a Croatian cellist, improviser and artist whose work explores and describes new sonic landscapes. Adding to her instrumental cello practice, she integrates analogue synthesizers and processed field recordings to her compositions.
Tisa N. Herlec is a Slovenian vocalist who plays with language and imagination. She is active in a variety of media;  writing, improvising, speaking, organizing, painting and assembling - preferably collectively.

For the first time since February we're back at our familiar spot in Rotterdam Noord; the fine Kapelzaal of Klooster Oude Noorden. Tonight's triple bill of electro-acoustic delicacies features Alex and George's brilliant Able Noise, the slow build-up musique concrète gubbins of Mark Smith (aka the Sunshine Lounge), and Linus B' electronica feast.
This is a 'reservation only' show. Please send a PM to our facebook account (Vrooom or Sandwich Island) or contact: info[at]sandwich-island[dot]com.

┆ABLE NOISE┆int'l
Able Noise is an experimental baritone guitar and drum duo, based between The Hague and Athens. Through the use of voices, tapes and alternative methods of playing their instruments, the duo create a somewhat minimal but really captivating performance. Taken as a whole, the feel of their sound reminds us of Chicago post-rock stalwarts Gastr del Sol, and that is no mean feat.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKCPQ_3nR18

┆THE SUNSHINE LOUNGE┆sct/nl
The Glasgow born, Dutch resident Mark Smith is a music maker, radio DJ, concert promoter, and Jerry Sadowitz fan. His solo-project Sunshine Lounge plows a furrow between relaxation and lime cordial, elephants and violence, green and polkadots, Penelope Keith and chaos. In his live sets, Mark uses home made instruments, electromagnetic chunder and acoustic gubbins.

┆LINUS B┆roffa
Linus B is a producer, DJ and visual artist who finds his inspiration in the arbitrariness of daily life. Mending and bending recorded samples of the things around him, his music is an auditive feast, a celebration and happy estrangement of the everyday. There is room for tenderness, kitsch, and a bit of confusion.

4th instalment of the 'Koffie & Ambacht x Vrooom goes to church' series with four different live sets.
Dive into an Orphan Fairytale of auditory dreaminess, get entangled in Mayo's cassette tape salad and listen to the sounds of the historic Hess church organ, this time played by sound artist Bart van Dongen. Last but not least, Cengiz Arslanpay will reinterpret ancient Ottoman music in his soloset.

This is a 'reservation only' show... Please send an e-mail to the address above for confirmation, or reserve through Facebook. There will be no alcoholic drinks for sale, since this would require a permit for the type of event which are still prohibited from taking place.

┆MAYO (Matthias Hurtl & Yoana Buzova)┆roffa / at/bg
Mayo is Matthias Hurtl (AT/NL) and Yoana Buzova (BG/NL). Together they perform with a multitude of cassette players and electronics; cutting, pasting, touching, licking, pulling, stretching and scratching the tape loops which they feed to these devices. The duo layer the resulting raw sound material with noise into an uncanny, imaginary magnetic tape landscape. Matthias is a sound artist who specializes in so-called signal hunting - a kind of recording practice that utilizes handmade tools and antennas, with which he hunts for satellite transmission signals. He uses his findings in compositions and live performances. Yoana is an artist and educator who seeks to resist imposed structures, beliefs and technologies. In her artist practice she employs the idea of 'uselessness', low-tech, DIY methods, and repurposed material to engage an audience in temporary fictions.

┆ORPHAN FAIRYTALE┆be
Orphan Fairytale (Eva van Deuren) is a artist/musician from Antwerp who has been making waves with a variety of surprising music projects since the turn of the millennium. She has been playing drums with Maskesmachine, experimented with tape loops in an outfit named Eekhoorn X, and was involved in Antwerp's bastion for freeform radio, Radio Centraal. The development of her own creative multiverse, along with the realisation that she had her own story to tell, led to the emergence of Orphan Fairytale, Eva's current musical project. Using keyboards, harp, flutes, voice, samples of drums, toy instruments and found objects, she creates a playful realm of dissociated musical dreaminess. New release out on Ultra Eczema soon!

┆BART VAN DONGEN┆nl
Bart van Dongen is a pianist, composer and concert organizer. He is a household name in the Dutch improv, jazz and composer scene. Among other things, he has been the artistic director of Intro / In Situ in Maastricht (an organization for new music and sound art), and he managed the small-scale stage ARTuarium in Den Bosch. At this event, Bart will play the historic Hess church organ from 1784.
https://www.bartvandongen.com

┆CENGIZ ARSLANPAY┆nl
Cengiz Arslanpay is a multi-instrumentalist and composer whose work is characterized by smooth transitions between contemporary and folkloric musical spheres. He mainly plays the Nay (or 'Ney'; an end-blown flute that figures prominently in Middle Eastern music) and electronic synthesizers, though he is also familiar with the practise of other kinds of instruments from the Middle East. At Vrooom x Koffie & Ambacht, Cengiz will reinterpret ancient Ottoman music.

3rd instalment of the 'Koffie & Ambacht x Vrooom goes to church' series. We're joining hands in an endeavour to lift the spirits with fine experimental live music, and a dance-performance. Place of action: the beautiful Oude kerk in Charlois where we will congregate with the latest Covid-19 regulations in place.
This is a 'reservation only' show... Please send an e-mail for confirmation, check the facebook event page.

┆MÁRI MÁKO┆hu
Mári Mákó is a composer and electronica/sound artist whose music strives to create the experience of an unhindered and natural musical flow with which she challenges the rigid ‘recital form’ of concerts. She will be performing a solo set using live electronics combined with voice, specially adapted zithers and other acoustic sound sources, often in conjunction with several performative tools and electronic devices of her own creation.
https://marimako.com

┆ALAN PURVES / MARK ALBAN LOTZ┆de/uk/nl
Purves & Lotz make music that's free of conventions, continuously balancing on the edge of discovery. The pairing of flutes and drums might be one of the oldest musical combinations ever, but it is revived in an exciting new form by this duo. Multi-flautist Mark and self-proclaimed “squeekologist” and percussionist Alan are true individualists on top of their game. Both expatriates (Germany and Scotland respectively) live and work in the Netherlands, refining their skills in the Amsterdam music scene, creating unique sound palettes of their own.

┆SUZANA LAŞCU / JORRIT WESTERHOF┆ro/nl
Jorrit Westerhof (guitar) and Suzana Lașcu (voice) began collaborating back in 2013 and their eclectic styles of playing and writing fused across a number of projects over the years since. The duo currently dwell in the realm of (acoustic) experimental music. Live, you can expect a wild mélange of influences, from Zorn to Hagen and back.

┆MARIA SARTZETAKI / ROBIN BECKER┆gr/nl
Choreographer and performer Maria Sartzetaki and musician / sound artist Robin Becker will present an iteration of their dance/music collaboration "Second Sphere", a project which is adapted to the church. In this piece they explore aspects of transformation in a realm between sound and movement, the Moon and the Earth, lunacy and clarity, wandering within the decomposing core of a lost planet.

┆PIERRE BASTIEN & GONÇALO ALMEIDA┆fr/pt/r'dam –  "Dois Deux"
Revered French musician, composer, and instrument builder Pierre Bastien began building his unique mechanical-based musical instruments at an early age, using metronomes, cymbals, and pulleys. In 1977, he composed music with Pascal Comelade for dance companies and in 1986 he created his own Mecanium orchestra comprised of Meccano machines. The mecanium plays various instruments such as the Chinese lute, Moroccan bendir, Javanese saron, koto, and violin. By the 1990s it consisted of up to 80 machine 'musicians'. Bastien has collaborated with e.g. Robert Wyatt, Jac Berrocal, Jaki Liebezeit, and released records on Lowlands, Rephlex, Tigersushi, and Alga Marghen.
Bassist / composer Gonçalo Almeida, originally from Portugal, has been making his mark as one of The Netherlands' most interesting bass players in the last decade. His projects involve collaborations with the cream of the crop of the Dutch and Portuguese jazz scenes, bridging modern jazz, free jazz, jazzcore, and free improvisation.
This night, Pierre and Gonçalo will present their first live collab as a duo, preceding their upcoming "Room Sessions" release on Almeida's Cylinder recordings.

┆GIOVANNI DI DOMENICO┆it/be
Giovanni Di Domenico is a pianist from Rome. His music practise builts on an comprehensive understanding of techniques; rhythm, harmony and tone – a generational distinction he shares with many of the musicians he has crossed paths with: Nate Wooley, Chris Corsano, Arve Henriksen, Jim O’Rourke, Alexandra Grimal, Tetuzi Akiyama, to name but a few. Di Domenico also founded his own label, Silent Water, home of the eclectic and occasionally unclassifiable. At this event, Giovanni will freely improvise on the historic Hess church organ from 1784.

┆PETER ZEGVELD┆nl

Peter Zegveld is a Dutch visual artist and sound performer. He built a theater for cars moving on the highway, performed a concert on a beach which included explosives, designed a container in which the visitor could 'blow himself up', and made many perfomances for children, including one where babies were shot into an audience with a cannon. He also presented Villa Achterwerk, a famous Dutch children's television program. Tonight's show will involve his so-called "Plofkist", "stokkenbas", "bliksnaar", "ratelrad", and the "mechanische bliksnaar"... Rhythmic, romantic, symphonic, suspenseful music with visual garnish that can derail and cause a stir.

Asmus Tietchens is a living legend of German electronic avant-garde music and we're honoured to have him as our guest at our 80th edition. His elusive music has been often lumped in into lazy genre categorizations in an attempt to contextualize his body of work, but in Tietchens' opinion music should be no more than itself. He is a purveyor of absolute music and most of his pieces can be interpreted as results of formalistic exercises, designed for an audience who insist on more than easy listening. Bluntaxe is a Dutch five-piece who will perform a live set where concrete poetry and sound meet. Tietchens' set will be complemented with a DJ set from DJ Zipo.

┆ASMUS TIETCHENS┆de
Asmus Tietchens (1947) is one of the most important and unique figures in non-academic electronic music and sound manipulation. The Hamburg-based composer has made more than 80 albums worldwide and has collaborated with many different sound artists.

┆BLUNTAXE┆nl
Bluntaxe is a group centered around the concrete poetry of ACG Vianen. The sounds and words by Vianen are complemented by a combination of bass (Jan Vanderlest), drums (Rik van Iersel), guitar (Jacq Palinckx) and saxophone/electronica (Edward Capel). Bluntaxe was created from a series of monthly instant composing events at TAC in Eindhoven, providing exciting encounters between of words and music. Artists brought what they had in common; the freedom of sound art.

┆DJ ZIPO┆de / aufabwegen
Zipo aka Till Kniola will play a DJ set that contains electronic bricolage and field recordings. He is the main editor of Aufabwegen; a magazine, label and mailorder that ranks as one of the most comprehensive, long-running underground publications in Germany, covering all things Post-Industrial, Ambient and Noise. Aufabwegen published a monography on Asmus Tietchens in 1998, alongside a number of CD releases. Till curates sound events in Cologne and is the artistic director of the 'Geraüschwelten Festival' in Münster, Germany, which is co-produced with Radio WDR 3.
