Trumpeter and composer Felicity Provan is a household name in the Amsterdam improvisation scene. Poetic narratives, songs, and lyrical melodies with rhythmic momentum best describe her quintet. The music flows from solos to pieces and surprises with moments of group acapella. Playful and thoughtful with hints of the theatrical, these distinct personalities perform a vibrant sound mixing composition and improvisation, which can sound delicate as well as wild.

Jos Smolders has been a mainstay of the Dutch electronic soundart scene for many years. He is a founding member of the renowned Dutch electroacoustic ensemble THU20. Tonight, his performance is based on the exciting sounds of the 'Blippoo'; a synth box handmade by Dutch designer Rob Hordijk (perhaps The Netherland's most famous synth & module builder) which offers a ton of possibilities for weird and tense improvisation.

Manirastar aka Bintang Manira Manik is a multi-instrumentalist from Bandung, Indonesia. In addition to his studies at Codarts, he focuses on percussive ambient, soundscapes, and tribal chanting in his own work. He learned to play a wide variety of percussion instruments and completed three years of studying the tabla at the institute of Indian classical music and dance; Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi. Tonight he will perform with the handpan.

Vrooom's end-of-the-year jamboree. A fine crew of local artists and friends will present a genre-defying program of different dynamics of sound using keys, strings, and electronica.

Trio consisting of Maya Felixbrodt, Nina Hitz, and Reinier van Houdt. They will be performing a unique graphic score that will form a type of symphony in 3 or 4 parts. The piece is being determined and rehearsed as we speak.
Amsterdam-based Maya Felixbrodt is a viola player who explores different styles, genres and disciplines. Reinier van Houdt is a renowned Dutch pianist whose work revolves around matters that escape notation: sound, timing, space, physicality, memory, noise, environment - points beyond composition, interpretation and improvisation. Nina Hitz is a Swiss-born cellist who plays baroque music, and is also involved in experimental and theatrical performances, and various avant rock bands.

Lucija Gregov is a cellist and improviser who uses analogue synthesizers and processed field recordings to creating her very own sonic language. Her visceral approach to improvisation proposes a radically different way of creating and performing beyond the current dynamics of sound.

The culmination of a long-term project by Jeroen Kuster. In 1996, as a student at the Aki Enschede, he started recording all kinds of sounds with a voice recorder with the intention to make music with it one day. He kept doing this throughout the years; first on tape, then digitally, and he recently finally completed a work with the source material during a residency in Paris.

Instruments Make Play is een platform voor de bouwers en bespelers van nieuw uitgevonden, zelfgebouwde, onconventionele muziekinstrumenten. Op zaterdag 14 december presenteert Instruments Make Play vanaf 2 uur 's middags tot 8 uur 's avonds een uitgebreid programma in WORM dat het midden houdt tussen een festival en een beurs voor zowel publiek als makers. Op elk moment van de dag zijn er performances te zien en te beluisteren, naast de vele te aanschouwen installaties en presentaties in de zalen van WORM. Iedere instrumentenbouwer geeft een korte showcase.

Instruments Make Play is a platform for the inventors and players of newly invented, unconventional musical instruments. On Saturday December 14, from 2 PM to 8 PM, Instruments Make Play presents an extensive program in WORM, which is basically 50/50 a festival and a fair, for both public and makers. Throughout the day there are continuous performances and showcases to see and listen to, in addition to the many installations that are on view. The fair is a meeting point for like-minded people that build their own musical instruments (which in some cases will be for sale) and audiences alike.

Anderhalf jaar geleden startte Koffie & Ambacht de reeks ‘Koffie & Ambacht Goes To Church’ in de Oude Kerk van Charlois. Een prachtige ruimte met een bijzondere akoestiek: geen bombastische gotiek waarin ieder geluid verzuipt in clichés van goddelijkheid, maar een aantrekkelijke galm die het gevoel van ruimtelijkheid voedt. Deze kerk is een actieve kerk met een vitaal en open karakter. Voor deze 9e editie slaat Koffie & Ambacht de handen ineen met Vrooom voor een gezamelijke aflevering. We creëren in dit programma een situatie waarin de muziek en de muzikanten het best tot hun recht komen. We besteden speciaal aandacht aan de thematiek, akoestiek en enscenering.

Eighteen months ago, Koffie & Ambacht started the ‘Koffie & Ambacht Goes To Church’ series in De Oude Kerk of Charlois; a beautiful space with special acoustics: no gothic bombast in which every sound drowns in cliches of divinity, but an attractive reverb that feeds the sensation of spaciousness. This old church is an active place with a vital and open character. In this collaborative program between Koffie & Ambacht and Vrooom the focus is on theme, accoustics and staging. The concerts of Picatrix aka Greetje Bijma, Mary Oliver, and Nora Mulder are marvelous adventures. We hear light classical sounds coming from a piano, grating against the screeching eruptions of the viola, and jazz ballads shifting into dark throat singing. Piano and viola strings growl and snarl, vocal chords vibrate in the highest or the lowest register; all of this with an added sense of drama. This original trio, which made its debut at the Le Guess Who? festival in 2017, feels at home at many different stages. Nora Mulder is known for her performances of contemporary classical music, improvised music and absurdist sound installations. Mary Oliver has a repertoire in both composed and improvised music, and is a member of the Instant Composer Pool Orchestra. Greetje Bijma is one of the best-known vocalists in The Netherlands, and was the first woman to be awarded the major Dutch jazz award, the Boy Edgar Prize.

 Joachim Badenhorst is a reed player from Antwerp who is active in many different groups and projects (including Carate Urio Orchestra, Mógil, Han Bennink trio, etc). Recently he has been working on an electronica project called Zero Years Kid with which he released the album 'Ongerijmde rijmen'. Next to that, Joachim also worked with Rutger Zuydervelt for one of the tracks of the Machinefabriek album 'With voices'.

Extraordinary double bill featuring the gaucho psychics los siquicos litoraleños from Argentina, and the witch of Texcoco - La Bruja De Texcoco from Mexico. La Bruja De Texcoco is a music performance born out of a rejection of masculinity in Mexican music, taking traditional Mexican music down a feminine path, into a fabulous world of baroque extravagance. Los Siquicos Litoraleños (The psychics of el Litoral) is a unique band formed in 2004 who are originally from the outland countryside around the small city Curuzú Cuatiá in the province of Corrientes, northeast of Argentina. It's an area known as 'el Litoral', where the locals are called Litoraleños. The band plays a highly original style using acoustic / electric guitars and drums, adding toy keyboards, shortwave radios and all sorts of domestic machinery (i.e. washing machines and freezers). Stuffed with a vast array of sound effects, they craft otherworldly tunes which cover tropicalia genres such as cumbia, chamamé (popular folk music of Corrientes and other regions), chicha, and a variety of non-rock rhythms. Los Siquicos' first European tour in 2009 was organised by the then still unnamed Pantropical, and Worm.

La Bruja de Texcoco (The Witch of Texcoco) from Mexico City, has been dedicated to music for twenty years. A lover of transfeminity and Mexican tradition, La Bruja was born in Texcoco, into a world of rituals, armadillo shells and the depth of the night. “I did not find La Bruja, she found me ...”I stand firm and proud, wearing my huipil (traditional Mexican indigenous garment) that has a thousand colors and speaks to the wind." La Bruja De Texcoco is a music performance project born out of a rejection of masculinity in Mexican music. From the Curuzú Cuatiá in the rural heart of the Argentine Northeast and, a group of quirky musicians invent a new sound: psychedelic chamamé folk. They are Los Siquicos Litoraleños, also lovingly dubbed as "The Pink Floyd of the Poor". "Dazzle Lights" is a docufilm that follows the band and their surroundings. They are inadvertently the instigators of a fresh take on things in the music scene before deciding to step out of it, showing more interest in cultural debates about chamamé, UFOs and mushrooms instead.

This night we're hosting the seven-piece (!) band of Jeroen Kimman. They will play a unique live concert that owes more to Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota, and the experimentalism of early studio pioneers such as The Three Suns, Les Baxter and Martin Denny, than to other contemporary attempts at eclecticism. Next to that there's engaging solo sets by ex- Sightings Mark Morgan, and Gaute Granli. Another edition chock-full of idiosyncratic, GREAT music!

Orquesta Del Tiempo Perdido is the brainchild of musician and composer Jeroen Kimman. The music of this ambitious project is an eclectic, ‘post- everything’ amalgam, taking on aspects of contemporary classical music, jazz, experimental electro-acoustic, math-rock, pop, non-Western folklore, exotica and vaudeville. The points of reference are deftly approached on their own terms, and recontextualised in impossible composites. While playing most of the instruments of the Orquesta on the acclaimed "Stille" release on Shhpuma, Kinman rounded up some of Netherland’s most creative musicians, not only for the album but also for this unique live show at Vrooom!

Mark Morgan is mostly known as the guitarist and singer of Sightings, the New York City based avant rockers that existed from 1998 to 2013. This trio was described as a band exploring the outer reaches of sound by The Wire, Village Voice and Pitchfork among others. They released 10 full-length albums on Load, Ecstatic Peace, Fusetron and Dais, in addition to a few 7" singles. They extensively toured the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. Morgan also collaborated with No Neck Blues Band member Pat Murano in Key of Shame which released two separate albums on Italian labels Planam and Holidays. Morgan’s most recent release is his first solo guitar record Department of Heraldry released on Bill Nace’s Open Mouth.

Gaute Granli’s solo project has been his main musical output for the past five years where he explores a range of abstract and bizarre territories. He combines chanting, guitar, a range of effects with analog sampling and creates a dark and industrial sound. The music is freely improvised as well as composed. He's got two cassette albums out on Skussmaal: "Velkommen til Forus" and "Ingen Potetsekk Whatsoever". His third solo album is an LP/CD called "Animalskt", released in 2017 on Drid Machine Records and Unhinged. Drid Machine Records has also released a split vinyl with Gaute Granli and Clifford Torus.

Tonight's Vrooom event is an Instruments Make Play (see for more info below) festival spin-off with mindblowing performances from Jasna Veličković, Anton Mobin, Calum Stirling, and Chris Meighan. Jasna and Anton first met at WORM last December during the Instruments Make Play festival, where they demonstrated their own creations; Jasna’s Velicon and Anton’s Prepared Chamber. Since then, it obviously made sense for them to start working together as a duo, as their approach to the instruments seemed complementary and the aesthetics they each develop in their music could offer an innovative new musical form.

Calum Stirling's multidisciplinary art practice includes sculpture, sound, moving image and architectural intervention. He will be bringing his own developed, self-built Remote Village aka The Frolicsome Engines with him. This 64-channel electromechanical sound orchestra is part drum machine, part lo-fi sequencer that plays compositions with magnetic pedals on re-used musical instruments, children's toys and workplace waste. From angular staccato to loose swing, Calum's machine plays beats that are infected by the mechanical peculiarities and limitations of the unique construction of this machine. It's like a bastardization of a traditional fairground organ that tries to replicate the sound of an 808 drum machine, but ends up sounding like the rhythmic bump & grind of a regional British train as it bangs, squeaks and rattles.

Chris Meighan makes danceable electro with his 'Koffersynth' (suitcase synth), an all-in-one synthesizer, sequencer and drum computer built into an 80s Samsonite briefcase. He has been working on it for four years. The Koffersynth also provides video images. This creates a comprehensive multimedia experience.
