This night we will be taking a deep dive into Romania's captivating music scene. Together with co-hosts Sandwich Island, we proudly present lush Maneletronic pop, eclectic DJ sets and visuals. This event is co-organised in close collaboration with Europalia Arts Festival Romania. Take note: this is the first Vrooom-related event to take place on the V11 ship!
┆RAZE DE SOARE┆
The music of this illustrious duo epitomizes much of Future Nuggets' trademark "Maneletronics", a style that incorporates Manele (or more specifically "proto-manele") which is a form of folk pop from Romania with influences from all over the Balkan. Proto-Manele was the soundtrack to the wedding parties in Romania during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Raze de Soare's "Albatros" EP on Future Nuggets is a spirited tribute to one of the most locally famous proto-manele bands, the eponymous Albatros. Raze de Soare mixes dope bass and lush synth melodies into a chilled psychedelic ‘80s sound to dance to.

┆DRAGOȘ RUSU┆
Dragoş Rusu has been a prominent presence in Bucharest’s alternative music scene for over a decade. A DJ, journalist and music adventurer, he is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Attic Magazine; an online music platform that covers a wide variety of music and promotes Romanian artists and music culture worldwide. Rusu's DJ sets know no boundaries, he can be spotted playing textural Techno or Acid House as well as intriguing outernational oddities; African, Greek, Turkish, Arabic rhythms, and occasionally contemporary gypsy music. Since 2016, Dragoş has been the artistic director and curator of the acclaimed Outernational Days, a festival of music and related arts that digs deep into various subcultures positioned at the periphery of the international sphere.

┆BOGMAN ┆
Bogman is one of Bucharest's most versatile DJs. In the early ‘90s, he started a HipHop show for Radio Nova 22, the first independent radio station in Bucharest, and initiated the first Romanian HipHop parties. Later on he set up a series of social events together with DJ Vasile that turned a small games house into the The Web Club; a legendary place that every cool kid in town hung out at. In 2001, Bogman jumped the fence to New York, where he worked at the Turntable Lab store and became a resident DJ for Apt, and Nublu. Nowadays he is one of the programmers at the Control Club, one of the most important alternative music clubs in Bucharest.

First Vrooom after the summer. Our probes have scanned the peripheral music scene of Argentina and found Vic Bang's cheerful micro tunes And Yoto's dadaesque electroclash. Görkem Arıkan will present his impressive “ARMonic” performance, utilizing a self-made gesture-based system. Music performances to liven up your otherwise presumably boring Wednesday evening.
┆YOTO┆ar
Yoto is the off-the-wall solo project of Ignacio Sandoval; an artist born in Córdoba, Argentina. After being a singer, drummer and guitarist in multiple bands, he began working with SunVox (a modular synthesizer with a pattern-based sequencer) in 2017. Ignacio samples his own voice, various instruments and the sounds of all kinds of objects, resulting in a noisy collage of fractured but danceable rhythms. This all builds up to a rather explosive live performance. Next to his releases on Abyss, and Agva he also self-released seven other albums.

┆VIC BANG┆ar
Victoria Barca is a self-taught musician who performs solo as Vic Bang. Like Yoto, she is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She creates joyful micro songs using samples, guitar loops, cute melodies and stuttering rhythms. She has been part of a wide variety of music projects since 2006 and recently performed at MUTEK festival. Her latest recordings were released by Abyss; currently one of the most exciting electronica labels in Argentina.

┆GÖRKEM ARIKAN┆tr
Görkem Arıkan is an interdisciplinary artist who creates gesture-based audiovisual performance systems, embracing the aesthetics of failure. He is the co-founder of A.I.D (Art Is Dead) which is non-profit collective that organises experimental music and performance events in Turkey. Görkem recently graduated from the Institute of Sonology and STEIM masters, where he built "ARMonic", which aims for an intimate relationship between the computer and body.

Vrooom skipped June but is back in full (d)ef(f)ect at Klooster Oude Noorden this month. On the program: the Rotterdam premiere of a brand new piece by Andy Moor (THE EX) and Yannis Kyriakides, a solo set by Lucie Nezri, and a duo set by Elvis Homan and Stefan Lievestro. An evening of celestial turkeys, sonological exploration, the soundtracking of dream texts, and more.
┆YANNIS KYRIAKIDES & ANDY MOOR┆int'l┆– Sleep Talk
Sleep Talk is a new project by Yannis Kyriakides and Andy Moor (The Ex). Using dreams as source material, an algorithm generates sound based on the texts that are fed into it. The sounds originate from a three-day recording session in Venice during the Biennale, at the French Pavilion in October 2018. In concert Andy and Yannis add their performance and improvisation skills to create an intense, full soundtrack to the dream texts which are projected on a screen. The recorded voices of Scottish composer Genevieve Murphy and Italian comtemporary dancer Valentina Campora are added in English and Italian, retelling the dream and adding another layer to the this rich dense world of sound, words and image.

Lucie Nezri is a composer, performer, and DJ from France, currently studying at the Institute of Sonology. in her eclectic artistic practice, Nezri is drawn towards the use of probabilities, deviations and subjectivism. Vrooom is checking in at Klooster Oude Noorden for an evening of catchy songs and playful sound. 20 Guilders is the Tokyo-Based duo of Suzuki Junzo and Mitsuru Tabata, who play dreamy acid-folk songs. Tabata is a founding member of the Hanatarash and Boredoms, and is also known for his involvement in Acid Mothers Temple and Zeni Geva. Suzuki Junzo usually plays solo guitar noise sets and is a member of Miminokoto. Sam Gas Can indulges in meta-pop-art. Gigaldi Gratt will play the Flügelhorn alongside Richie Herbst's analog modular synthesizer explorations.
┆20 GUILDERS┆jp - Tabata Mitsuru & Suzuki Junzo
Famed Tokyo troublemakers Tabata Mitsuru and Suzuki Junzo got together to create dreamy psych-folk as the duo 20 Guilders. With lots of experience between them as (ex-) members of Acid Mothers Temple, Zeni Geva, Miminokoto, Overhang Party, etc, they incorporate influences from around the globe in their refined repertoire of catchy psych songs. Based on the straightforward, gentle guitarwork of Junzo and the heartfelt singing of Tabata, their songs are often peaceful, but also contain occasional bursts of fuzz.

┆SAM GAS CAN)┆us
Sam Gaskin has been playing and recording music for more than ten years under the moniker of Sam Gas Can, with which has released a wide variety of releases. He played various instruments in free-form bands like Sunburned Hand of the Man, and Egg, Eggs [sic]. His unique vision of DIY self-expression salutes the original cassette culture generation with a precise use of pop song structures and with a sparkling sense of humour. He is very much of the Jad Fair school of thought; put something in his hands and he will be able to play, and play it "well". Think also of R. Stevie Moore, early Beck or Vyto B.

These guys are key players in the Austrian experimental music scene. Richie Herbst is a musician and sound activist based in Graz, often credited simply as Herbst. Whoops, it's our seventieth, how did that happen, will someone do an eulogy for us? On the program: A father/daughter dada-leaning duo whose improvised musical and geographical excursions will leave your head spinning like a well rubbered doughnut in a car park. A special occasion live collab between Guido Hübner (Das Synthetische Mischgewebe) and Rotterdam-based expert knob twiddler Roel Meelkop, and, last but not least: a live coding set by eerieear.
┆YEAH YOU┆uk
Yeah You is daughter/father duo Elvin Brandhi and Gustav Thomas. Their project grew from a desire to make something during every spare moment, using compact recording gear to turn banal everyday family drives to into spontaneous recording sessions in the car. Thomas’s distorted and alluringly jarred synthesisations act as a jagged platform for Brandhi to writhe improvised stream of consciousness lyrical trips. Their latest LP 'KRUTCH' is a burst of poisonous, weaponised pop spat out on the roam, and captures the exhilaration of driving with your eyes closed. Recorded mainly in a Renault Clio in The Netherlands and Germany throughout early 2017, it is the duo at a freshly terrifying apex, funneling desperation through an unerring noise pop lens.

┆DAS SYNTHETISCHE MISCHGEWEBE & ROEL MEELKOP┆de/nl
Guido Hübner (DSM) & Roel Meelkop have been involved in experimental music for decades. DSM initially formed as a group in Berlin in the early 1980s and quickly became part of the early international industrial cassette scene. Composing for light installations with open-reel machines, cassette recorders, microphone and guitar fuzz boxes, they created a type of electroacoustic anti-music. With unusual concerts in the underground network as well as in high art institutions and museums (Centre Pompidou, etc.), the group toured with changing casts for many years. Hübner remained as the fixed core. Meelkop has similar origins in projects such as THU20, Kapotte Muziek and GOEM. Together the duo will perform for this particular occasion. Their duo performance will be characterized by the use of modular sets on stage: an acoustic one (DSM) and an electronic one (RM).

┆eerieear┆ar
eeriear from Buenos Aires has been meticulously tuning up his scripts for his live-coding set at Vrooom. Live coding or 'on-the-fly programming' is an integral part of the running program in question. As a performing art form it is a creativity technique centred upon the writing of source code and the use of interactive programming in an improvised way. Live coding is often used to create sound and image based digital media, as well as light systems, improvised dance and poetry, though is particularly prevalent in computer music.

Vrooom #69 offers stark contrast between the savage drum excorcism of Kiyasu Ryosuke (of Fushitsusha / Sete Star Sept fame) and the sophisticated sound construct of instrument builder Andreas Oskar Hirsch. Additionally, we have the Dutch electronica veterans Gert-Jan Prins and Bas van Koolwijk, who experiment with both image and sound using a self-developed range of electronics. Your DJ of the night: Nikola Vidaković.
┆RYOSUKE KIYASU┆jp
Ryosuke Kiyasu has been playing drums in a variety of bands since 1995. In the world of extreme hardcore punk and grindcore he is mainly known as the drummer of Sete Star Sept, but was also involved with the Canadian powerviolence outfit The Endless Blockade. In the experimental music scene he is renowned for his work with the legendary Japanese avant-rock group Fushitsusha, which also features Keiji Haino. Kiyasu's solo drum performances are visceral, hairy, and split audiences.

┆ANDREAS OSKAR HIRSCH┆de
Andreas Hirsch is a Cologne-based musician, visual artist and inventor of electroacoustic instruments. He performs with the self-built 'Electric Palm Leaf' or the 'Carbophone'. The latter can be described as a kind of complex "super" kalimba. Both lend themselves for warm downbeat rhythms and odd tonalities. Hirsch creates a space somewhere between playful leftfield electronics and freestyle gamelan. Together with Patricia Koellges he runs Makiphon - a label for experimental music which also features his latest album 'Early Carbophonics'.

┆GERT-JAN PRINS & BAS VAN KOOLWIJK┆nl
The Dutch multimedia duo Gert-Jan Prins and Bas van Koolwijk explore the possibilities of analogue and digital equipment commonly used to generate pictures by feeding them something different than just "proper" video signals. With their 'Synchronator' project they explore the very technical structure of the hardware, and generate pictures that expose and reflect the true nature of machines behind the commonly known TV image. The artists also experiment with the visual representation of sound by direct implementation of audio signal to special, self-made picture generating systems.

First round of the year! Another vibrant three-way mix of different performances, featuring: the award-winning "LSe" (a selfbuilt instrument made by Kacper Ziemianin), a solo set by Knalpot's Gerri Jäger, and "sonic brain goo" electronica project Yader aka Bear Bones, Lay Low + Jooklo Duo.
GERRI JÄGER ┆ at/nlGerri Jäger is best known for the duo Knalpot with Raphael Vanoli, who have been infiltrating the Amsterdam underground as well as the European clubs and festivals with their combination of raw electronics, wild improvistation and danceable dub. Following his studies at the concervatory of Amsterdam, the Austrian-born drummer immersed himself in the realm of experimental music, combining his drums with the kind of gear mostly associated with DJ’s.

YADER ┆ ve/it [ bear bones, lay low / jooklo duo ] "Spaced out jumbles from three cyclonic backstreet hypno-freaks" is one apt way to describe the music of Yader - the improv electronica outfit comprised of Ernesto González (Bear Bones, Lay Low) and David Vanzan & Virginia Genta (Jooklo Duo). This trio just released a cassette on the Bear Town Records imprint containing music for meditation or the act of mapping the inside of a pyramid. It's the stuff for purposes beyond explanations.https://soundcloud.com/beartown_records/nothing-is-real-yader
https://jookloduo.bandcamp.com
CTRL FREQ ┆ pl
Ctrl Freq is Kacper Ziemianin; a sound designer, circuit bender, improviser, audio hacker, and instrument designer. The "LSe" is his self-built, award-winning musical instrument for live electronic music. It allows users to program sequences of light which are translated into sounds; a combination that opens up lots of possibilities for controlling, structuring and interacting with sound. This instrument addresses the ‚liveness‘ of electronic music performances; how does the audience know if the performance is really live? How can we relate to the onstage actions of the musicians? Ctrl Freq's 'LSe' creates a direct link between the visual and sonic realm.
