Last one of this year. Stuff that cavity, have a bag of crisps and a fizzy drink. The sixth coming is near already.

MACHINEFABRIEK & MARCO DOUMA (nl)
Rotterdam's perhaps most industrious knob twiddler Machinefabriek combines ambient, modern classical, minimalism, drone and field recordings. His pieces unfold as ‘films without image’, with a sharp ear for detail. At Vrooom Machinefabriek will collaborate with multidisciplinary artist Marco Douma. The duo will present a 30 minute audiovisual improvisation.

E-KARE
E-kare (ay oi u) is a two-person chaos collective whose hobbies include "chao babies, gameboys, caring for the hamster and watching the international". Expect something and nothing and everything all at the same time or whatever.

POSTPEOPLE
The Postpeople is one thing. It might seem like it's more than one thing but it's not. It wears a strange outfit of furniture, machinery and musical equipment. Its voice comes from cooperation between several organs. It stands out in the rain. It eats potatoes. It is surrounded by white paper. It is alive. It wishes you well. Happy Christmas.

DIFFICULT
We are Difficult. Tracy Hanna, Eothen Stearn and Kari Le Riche Robertson. Mixing synth feminism with vocal sarcasm. A Difficult playing of unfamiliar instruments and improvisation. It's going to be Difficult for all!

Saturday 25 November

VROOOM #54

– ASIQ NARGILE (ge)
– EL OTRO (Manuela Tessi & Arvind Ganga)
– CHRIS BAAS (nl)

location: Pink Pank – Delftsestraat 9, Rotterdam
doors: 20:30 end: 00:00 / entrance: 7 euro (cash only)
FB event

Vrooom rolls out the red carpet for Asiq Nargile and her virtuoso solo perfomance of saz and voice. Asiq has been owning stages at esteemed venues and festivals during the course of 2016 and toured with Richard Dawson (Vrooom #25, 2015). Special guests: El Otro. DJ: Chris Baas.

ASIQ NARGILE (ge)
Born in Tbilisi and now based in the Borcali region of Southern Georgia, Nargile Mehtiyeva aka Asiq Nargile has been playing saz (a long-neck lute) and singing since the age of 15. Fluent in Azerbaijani, Georgian, and Russian, Nargile represents the cosmopolitan heritage of old Tbilisi, a city once known as a meeting point for multilingual aşıq bards who would travel through the region serving as conduits for news, ideas, music and culture. A powerful solo performer, her vocal recital of epic folk poetry is by turns ecstatic and deeply expressive, and is interspersed with bursts of virtuosic, highly ornamented saz. Equally comfortable performing moving laments or upbeat folk dances, Nargile is currently the only female aşıq living and performing in the ethnic Azeri region of Georgia, and has been teaching the art to new generations. Thanks to the efforts of The Sayat Nova Project, a non-profit group aiming to help preserve and promote the diverse musical dialects of the Caucasus, European audiences can now experience the elusive, hypnotic beauty of Nargile’s music for themselves.
Aşıq Nargile - Yurd Yeri

EL OTRO (Manuela Tessi & Arvind Ganga)
El Otro is the duo of Manuela Tessi (dance) and Arvind Ganga (guitar, objects). The pair engages with the venue's space and audience presence through a set of improvised music and dance. Or, as they like to describe it: "a journey to their inner souths, where the sun is blistering and the loins call the shots, transforming a dusty sleepy town into a desperado inferno in a matter of seconds."
www.arvindganga.net

CHRIS BAAS (nl)
Rotterdam-based DJ with a fine, eclectic taste who will set the mood. He is mostly known for his sets under the banner of Pantropical (Mdou Moctar, Gaye Su Akyol, Altin Gün, etc.).

Pantropical x Indonesia

– KARINDING ATTACK (id)
UWALMASSA (id)dj's DIVISI62 (id)dj MADROTTER (nl/id)dj LE ROMPH (nl)

location: WORM Rotterdam – Boomgaardsstraat 71
21:00 – 03:00 | presale: 8,- / doors: 10,-
FB eventtickets (Worm)

Pantropical and WORM are proud to present an all-Indonesian music event that fuses both traditional and modern Indonesian music explorations, featuring exclusive live shows by Karinding Attack from Bandung and Uwalmassa from Jakarta. This pantropical event is co-organised in close collaboration with EUROPALIA INDONESIA (Europalia Arts Festival Indonesia).

KARINDING ATTACK (bandung)
The karinding is a kind of Jew's harp made outo of bamboo. Under the spell of this particular instrument nine musicians from the underground collectives Bandoong Sindekeit and Ujungberung Rebels got together in 2009 to learn and play it as well as many other sorts of music instruments made from bamboo; flutes, xylophones, and unconventional percussion. Adding a hefty portion of metal and punk-inspired elements to the brew, things quickly developed under the name Karinding Attack. The group achieved success throughout Indonesia and abroad, and performed with the likes of traditional Japanese music ensembles, Blues, Beatbox and Hip Hop bands and DJs.
http://karinding-attack.com/

UWALMASSA (jakarta | DIVISI62)

Uwalmassa can be seen as a fusion of international arts (both traditional and modern) translated through an Indonesian lens. By incorporating elements from a broad musical spectrum and using elaborate production techniques and non-conventional composition methods, Uwalmassa takes on the initiative in bringing Indonesian arts and culture into a more explorative and imaginative field of work. Uwalmassa is an integral part of DIVISI62, a sound and visual arts label concerned with the on-going construction of the Indonesian identity. Next to performing live as Uwalmassa, Divisi62 will also DJ at this event.

http://www.divisi62.com/

MADROTTER (r'dam, bandung)
Originally from Rotterdam, Madrotter aka Henk den Toom is a devoted crate digger who has been living in a village just outside Bandung in Indonesia for the last twenty years. He is widely known as the curator of the amazing Madrotter music blog which is chock-full of great music from across Indonesia. Madrotter will spin many of his found treasures, including Jaipong (popular Indonesian dance music), pergosi odong odong, tayuban, and other styles.
http://madrotter-treasure-hunt.blogspot.nl/

LE ROMPH (r'dam)
DJ who has fallen victim to contemporary cultural and musical omnivorism, which is reflected in his mixes. Proto-techno? Check. Oriental synth experiments? Included. Industrial balearics? There. At this event Le Romph will take yet another turn as Pantropical's resident DJ.

Thursday, October 26: Sandwich Island presents

– ATTACK OF THE MAD AXEMAN (de)
– GEWOON FUCKING RAGGEN (nl)
– THROWING BRICKS (nl)
– DJ URINE (fr)

location: WORM Rotterdam – Boomgaardsstraat 71
doors: 20.30 | end: around 23:30 | presale €6 | door 7€

https://www.facebook.com/events/1873312919597139/

Another show organised by one half of the Vrooom crew. Attack Of The Mad Axeman might look like an unassuming bunch (a bee, turtle, snail, owl and squirrel) but they sound like a rabid pack of baboons bred on a diet of Bolt Throwers and Terrorizers. Add to that the local and not-so-local heroes and DJ Urine (Vrooom #16, 2014) and you've a great line up if you'r into fast and grinding music.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

🚑 ATTACK OF THE MAD AXEMAN (hamburg)
No, this isn't a Michael Schenker tribute but super tight bulldozergrind from Hamburg. AOTMA might sound like a rabid pack of baboons bred on a diet of (old) Bolt Thrower and Terrorizer, but they appear in the unassuming shape of a bee, turtle, snail, owl and a squirrel. Don't make no mistake about it, these forest critters are just as fierce and competent as any top-tier grind combo out there, fully equipped to silence any sceptic.
animalgrind.org

🚑 GEWOON FUCKING RAGGEN (roffa)
On the back of recent tours that brought them to Austria, Czech Republc, Bulgaria, and Hungary – and a high profile show in 2016 at Obscene Extreme – Rotterdam’s premier powerviolence / punk / hc youth rebellion return to WORM to pummel their way through your earholes.
gewoonfuckingraggen.bandcamp.com

🚑 THROWING BRICKS (nl)
Promising new band from the Gouda / Utrecht area. Named after Ceremony’s most aggressive track, Throwing Bricks saw the light of day in December 2011. Listening to their quality release "Self-Distancing" from 2016, it becomes clear that these guys mean business. Not a one-trick pony, they nicely mix up Hardcore and late 90s screamo with Sludge elements and even some shoegaze. The band references Amenra, Slowdive, Converge, Discordance Axis, Ceremony, and Jesu.
throwingbricksband.bandcamp.com

🚑 DJ URINE (fr)
Parisian sound artist who creates sound collages from fragments of vinyl records. Like assembling a mosaic (or maybe even cutting up a pizza), these sound fragments are assembled in various methods, then played on customised turntables, to build up rhythms, loops and textures out of different genres. Sped-up Bollywood vocals can be heard over corrupted bars of Spazz or spoken word pieces, resulting in an imaginative chaotic barrage of sounds.

VROOOM #53

– ROBIN FOX / SEAN BAXTER (au)
– JOHNS LUNDS / JOHN CHANTLER (dk/au)
– ERGO PHIZMIZ (PLC) (uk)
– FASCIA LATA (fr) – dj

location: Pink Pank – Delfsestraat 9, Rotterdam
doors: 20:30 end: 00:00 / entrance: 6 Euro

FB event page

At this Vrooom: Max MSP'ed and brutal electroacoustic improvisation from Oz by Fox and Baxter, a mini electro opera on reclaiming your world and making a difference by Ergo Phizmiz, and Powerhouse saxophone player Johns Lunds (also known for the yoyooyoy and Mayhem collectives in DK) who will perform with sound artist and former Café OTO programmer John Chantler.

ROBIN FOX & SEAN BAXTER (au)
This duo performs intensely fractured and brutal electroacoustic improvisation. Embracing the traditions of abstract free improv and musique concrete, they create dynamic and spontaneous musical conversations utilising analogue and digital electronics, extended instrumental technique and real-time processing. Fox utilises MAX/MSP patches that he has written specifically to rapidly capture, mediate and regenerate sound sources whilst Baxter approaches the drum kit with various elements of percussive junk to generate unconventional sounds. Together, the duo incorporate the use of real-time processing to build insanely fragmented layers of noise which, whilst completely freely improvised, attain a level of precision and discipline which evoke the most meticulously crafted compositions. Both Fox and Baxter have been at the forefront of the Australian sonic avant garde for two decades, and have been collaborating in various guises for over 15 years.
http://robinfox.com.au | soundcloud.com/sean-baxter

JOHNS LUNDS / JOHN CHANTLER (dk/au)
A duo for saxophone and synthesizer. Johns and John lock into a series of cycles and frequency systems that, while loosely in the tradition of the patterned saxophony and accompanying string drone of La Monte Young and the "Theatre of Eternal Dream Music’s B Flat Dorian Blues", obliterates the instrumental hierarchy that Young adopted, for an altogether more unknowable intensity of experience.
yoyooyoy.dk/johns_lunds.htm | http://inventingzero.net/home

ERGO PHIZMIZ (uk)

Reclaim your world. Make a difference. Avant-Garde Sport is the doorway to a new cultural utopia. You look great in tracky bottoms. Ergo Phizmiz (PLC) returns with an electro opera on two things: Reclaiming your world, and making a difference. ergophizmiz.bandcamp.com

Picking things up again for the second half of 2017. No less than six different sets comprising many different approaches. Includes: "a Norwegian beatnik getting spooky", local improv ballsiness played by jesus, (prepared) guitars, found sound, a saxophone played by a Roman turned Brusselian, technoïd electronica, and generally a bunch of good tunes.

GAUTE GRANLI (no)
The psychedelic, somewhat noisy music of Gaute Granli is created with seemingly shapeless, detuned guitar strumming, mysteriously manipulated percussion and electronics, and distorted moans. Some have compared his music to that of Jad Fair or Captain Beefheart. His third solo album will be released this september through Drid Machine (No Balls, Sightings, Staer, Golden Oriole) and Unhinged Records. Gaute is also a member of Skadne Krek and the amazing Freddy The Dyke.
soundcloud.com/verletzte-kreature
http://www.skussmaal.com/gaute-granli

STEVE JANSEN (us)
Steve Jansen loops a slow build of found and composed sounds contained on analog tape (for example: an amplified barbed wire fence, a skronky alto sax). This then devolves into an unsettling electronica / prepared guitar manipulation that usually involves broken ceramics, bottle caps, a crude metal rod from the hardware store and other rubbish snatched from the street outside of the venue, just minutes before the gig is about to start.
https://thatscoolrecords.bandcamp.com/album/tcr-032-opt-out-cassette

FOQL (pl)
FOQL's Justyna combines electronica with a post-punk atmosphere and dashes of minimal wave and industrial. She collaborated with labels such as New York Haunted, Pointless Geometry, Enfant Terrible / Gooiland Elektro, and released her 2nd album "Lower Your Expectations" via Always Human Tapes earlier this year. Justyna also co-curates the Polish online underground community Trzecia Fala, and is part of the Oramics project which aims to empower women that are active in the electronic music scene.
https://soundcloud.com/foql

DANIELE MARTINI (it)
Born in Rome and based in Brussels, Daniele Martini has developed a very eclectic and original approach to saxophone playing which has reverberated with many. His solo performance at Vrooom will be a powerful display of the 'otherness' of the sax, thoughtfully processed through electronics and without abandoning technical skills.

JORRIT WESTERHOF (nl)
Jorrit is a 25 year old jesus who relocated from Drachten to Rotterdam in recent times. That's about time for a midlife crisis. And this is the most important thing that you have to know about him. If you want to know more, dig deep within yourself when you hear him molesting his guitar.

FASCIA LATA (fr)
Composer/performer/DJ in the making from Paris who is currently based in Den Haag, studying at the Institute Of Sonology. As our DJ for the evening, she'll play a textural, warm-cold selection between the live sets.

Instruments / Electronics / Field Recordings / Fire / Smoke / Voice / Speech / Text / Banter / Mixing / Movement / Space / Momentum ... Vrooom is closing off the first half of its 2017 season before taking a well needed break. Come and join us once more, before pruimentijd!

DNK ENSEMBLE (int'l)
The DNK Ensemble is a group of artists centered around the (former) DNK-Amsterdam concert series for avant-garde, music, sound art, and performance. The series that were organized by Seamus Cater, Koen Nutters, and Martijn Tellinga currently lives on as the "Nearly Not There Records" record shop and will soon be revived from it's slumber. Tonight's DNK performance at Vrooom features Seamus Cater and Koen Nutters. The duo will perform a new version of a piece they developed for the art show "Things To Remember (Page Not Found)" (2016). It involves (amongst other things) memories, anecdotes, remote recordings and islands of slowly moving sound, sustained by an harmona organ, concertina and electronic tones.

JONATHAN CASTRO (pe)
Jonathan Castro is a musician, art director, and graphic designer from Lima, Peru. His music is a crossover of (guitar) noise and ambient with a specific taste for the eclectic. His appearance at Vrooom #51 marks his first solo live performance in the Netherlands.

NDR (Natalia Domínguez Rangel / co)

Natalia Domínguez Rangel is a composer / sound designer from Bogotá, whose work encompasses film music, electronica, music theater, performance, and video. She graduated from her Bachelor and Master in composition at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2010 and has since then collaborated with various ensembles (Nieuw Ensemble, Asko | Schönberg, Adapter ensemble, etc.), and worked on numerous projects. At this event she will dive deep into bold obscure sounds and genres as our DJ.

JACCO WEENER (nl)
Jacco weener is a performer, and theologist who lives in Rotterdam. His performances move in all directions; from tributes to Wim Sonneveld to religious theme evenings; anything is possible. This evening he will focus on the music side of things, demonstrating his unique take on singer/songwriting, mixed with tapeloops and a disturbing voice performance.

Sun, July 9: Goat / YPY / Le Romph

As you may have noticed, GOAT from Osaka (see Vrooom #41, 2016) can be seen again in Rotterdam, this time at a show presented by Sandwich-Island @ WORM Rotterdam. Highly recommended!

– GOAT (jp)
– YPY (jp)
– LE ROMPH (nl)

doors: 20.30 | presale €7
location: WORM – Boomgaardsstraat 71, Rotterdam
FB event page

Sandwich-Island
presents: Goat –– cutting edge instrumental rock from Japan. A mesmerizing rhythmic pulse of synchronized muted harmonic bass, saxophone and drums. YPY is the solo project of Goat's Koshiro Hino, and one of the finest examples of Osaka's contemporary experimental electronica scene.

GOAT (jp)
Goat is an Osaka-based band is comprised of bass, drums, percussion, and saxophone. What sets this quartet apart is the intentional disregard they pay to their instruments’ musical scales. In their painstakingly crafted percussive songs, they mute the melodic instruments to reinforce the beat, and make frequent use of harmonics played outside the twelve-tone system. The effect is a trance-inducing 'minimal techno'-like pulse that is both 'urban' and 'tribal'. Goat’s new 2017 line-up explores the rhythmic aspect even further, centering on intertwining patterns of repetitive rhythms. They have released two albums; the debut "New Games" (2013), and the second album "Rhythm & Sound" (2015).
• Koshiro Hino – percussion, bass
• Akihiko Ando – percussion, sax
• Tomohisa “Soopy” Suzuki – percussion, drums
• Takafumi Okada – percussion, drums
http://goatjp.com
https://soundcloud.com/goatjapan

YPY (jp)
Solo project from Goat's Koshiro Hino, who is a key member of Osaka's experimental music scene. Besides playing with Goat and touring with the Boredoms, he also leads another band called Bonanzas. His work as YPY can be described as oblique, dense electronica / techno with a dash of industrial grittiness. Hino debuted in 2015 with the 'Visions EP' for the Berlin-based label Nous, which included moody and dance-orientated tracks ignoring the unspoken rules of club music. He also runs the birdFriend label.

LE ROMPH (nl)
Rotterdam born-and-raised DJ who has fallen victim to contemporary cultural (i.e. musical) omnivorism. This is reflected in any Le Romph mix that you'll get to hear. Proto-techno? Check. Oriental synth experiments? Included. Exotic leftfield boogie? Got it. Industrial balearics? It's there! This youngster's DJ'ing will be a fine addition to the live action on offer.

#50; it's hard to believe we made it this far, already, but let's skip the sentimentalism and get right to it: we're delighted to welcome the revered Geoff Leigh and Makoto Kawabata (of Henry Cow, and Acid Mothers Temple Official respectively). They are visiting Vrooom after playing the Avantgarde Festival in Germany. Veterans Plan Kruutntoone have 25 years of vast experience under their belt, and will present their new album "Wat doen de handen". Charlois-via-Southeast Asia-via-France resident DJ Urine will play a set of turntable wizardy unlike anything you'd expect from the term 'turntablism'.

GEOFF LEIGH & MAKOTO KAWABATA (uk/jp)

New duo project that embraces a wide range of styles and influences, mixing elements ethnic/global, rock, jazz, ambient, & electronica, and is completely improvised.
GEOFF LEIGH –– flutes, soprano sax, laptop processing, voice
Well known for his work with Henry Cow in the early 70's, as well as contributing to fellow Virgin records bands of the time; Hatfield And The North, and Slapp Happy. In recent years Geoff has collaborated with members of Faust, Porcupine Tree (as Ex-Wise Heads with bassist Colin Edwin), Nurse With Wound, and musicians such as Mitsuru Tabata, Tatsuya Yoshida, & Nana Tsiboe. He is currently a member of Jump For Joy (featuring members of Faust & Henry Cow), and The Artaud Beats (also featuring Henry Cow alumni).
MAKOTO KAWABATA –– guitar, synthesiser, electronics, voice
Bandleader, guitarist / multi-instrumentalist of Acid Mothers Temple. While he's best known for his earsplitting guitar heroics with AMT, he's also the founder of his own school of ecstatic guitar drone using bowing and glissando techniques. Kawabata first started releasing works for electronics and homemade instruments in 1978. Since then his activities have been almost too wideranging to grasp: he has formed multiple units, released a plenitude of albums on many different labels and toured extensively all over the globe. He has played together with psychedelic originators like Gong, Guru Guru, Silver Apples, Nik Turner, Damo Suzuki, Träd Gräs och Stenar, with Occitanian trad musicians from the south of France, and in innumerable other sessions spanning all genres.

http://acidmothers.com/kawabata-makoto

PLAN KRUUTNTOONE (nl)
Having been called the most overlooked avant-rock group of The Netherlands, Plan Kruutntoone is a band with strong, poetic lyrics sung in the Dutch language. The trio that sometimes is accompanied by a string-quartet can be seen as part of the same cultural heritage that shaped artists like De Kift, Broeder Dieleman, and The Ex, to name some of their contemporaries. A sound that is also akin to artists of RēR / Recommended Records. The band toured extensively in east of Europe, Russia, and in the Balkan region. They will present their brand new, fifth full-length album "Wat doen de handen", released on Esc.Rec.
www.plankruutntoone.net

DJ URINE (fr)
Parisian sound artist who creates literal sound collages from fragments of vinyl records. From pizza slice like shards to mosaics, these are assembled in various hands-on methods, then played on 1 to 7 customized turntables, to build up rhythms, loops and textures out of many different musical genres. Sped-up Bollywood vocals can be heard over corrupted bars of Zappa, French folk songs, spoken word guitar tutors and breakcore, resulting in a delightfully imaginative chaotic barrage of sounds. Urine collaborated with e.g. Kawabata Makoto (see above), Otto Von Schirach, Senyawa, etc.

VROOOM #49

– DOOMSDAY STUDENT (us / ex- Arab On Radar)
– ALBATRE (int'l)
– STILLS / UIT ZICHT with PAK YAN LAU / AUDREY LAURO / REINHOLD BOGAARD

location: WORM Rotterdam – Boomgaardsstraat 71, Rotterdam
doors: 20:30 / start: 21:00 / entrance: 7,-
facebook event

Vrooom #49 kicks off with the trio of Pak Yan Lau, Audrey Lauro, and Reinhold Bogaard. Their "Stills / Uit Zicht" performance translates the transformation of six nearly static images into a mesmerizing slide show & live music set. Up next are local champs Albatre with their excellent noise rock / jazz hybrid. Doomsday Student's live show is pregnant with anxiety-inducing guitar wails, strange but hard rocking rhythms, and lyrics that read as depraved anecdotes and confessions. DJ's Neliz + Joriz will spin records.

DOOMSDAY STUDENT (us)
Doomsday Student is Eric Paul, Stephen Mattos, Craig Kureck, and Paul Vieira. Made up of members from bands such as Arab on Radar, The Chinese Stars, and Athletic Automaton, one should not be particularly surprised by the level of dissonance, mania, and peculiarity thoughtfully melded into every layer of the music, from unsettling lyrics to hysteric guitars and irregular rhythms. Obnoxious to those who seek the obvious but beloved by many others.

ALBATRE (int'l)
Albatre just returned from a European tour in March/April, and are keen to subject their homecrowd again to some truely pummeling, bass heavy noise rock. This trio is a commanding display of urgent bass & sax noise, skewed jazz elements, meticulous drumming and abrupt moodshifts. Albatre spearheads a scene of artists highlighting the crossover of improvisation, noise rock and jazz made in The Netherlands.
www.facebook.com/albatremusic

PAK YAN LAU / AUDREY LAURO / REINHOLD BOGAARD
– "Stills / Uit Zicht"
Six static images that transform with the live performance by Pak Yan Lau and Audrey Lauro. The STILLS project of Pak Yan Lau and Audrey Lauro cooperates with UIT ZICHT; Reinhold Bogaard providing the slide projections. The gradual changing of light and shadows is explored in six scenes each taken at a different time of day. Somewhere between film and static image each of the six scenes transforms under the influence of earth's orbit around the sun, gradual and mesmerizing. Stills uses these images as a score introducing elements of minimalism and noise to create a soundtrack that translates these almost frozen dynamics into sounds.
• Pak Yan Lau – toypiano's, synth, clockworks and electronics
• Audrey Lauro – alt saxophone
• Reinhold Bogaard – slide projector installation

HORSE LORDS (us / northern spy)
Grafting the relentless repetitions of modern minimalism onto the propulsive engine of rock and roll, Horse Lords create ecstatic music driven by dueling West African polyrhythms that curve endlessly past one another. This Baltimore quartet are currently one of the leading forces in the American DIY scene. Saxophonist / percussionist Andrew Bernstein, bassist/synthesist Max Eilbacher, guitarist Owen Gardner, and drummer Sam Haberman, employs arcane tuning systems to achieve their otherworldly harmonies, made possible by guitars refretted by Gardner. The result is at once stark and lush, tightly interwoven and threatening to fly apart, making their live performances spellbinding and utterly thrilling affairs.
http://horselords.tumblr.com

CLOUD BECOMES YOUR HAND (us / northern spy)
Like visions from a 3D comic book, color fantasies explode in the vivid sound of Cloud Becomes Your Hand. CBYH is a Brooklyn-based sextet that can be placed in the lineage that links the BBC Radiophonics Workshop to the happy goofing of Syd-era Pink Floyd, Devo to the collage-happy Elephant 6 Recording Company, and Cardiacs to They Might be Giants. CBYH are purveyors of psych-pop of the highest order, delivered in a kinetically singular dialect of the musical language of fun.

GLORIAS NAVALES (cl)
Glorias Navales is a band based in Viña Del Mar, Chile. They combine local folk traditions and paganism with a post- Velvet Underground aesthetic. Imagine the likes of Lou Reed, John Cale and Violeta Parra (a famed pioneering Chilean songwriter, folklorist, ethnomusicologist and visual artist) together doing late night acoustic lo-fi trance jams in the rural splendour of Chile.

We're thrilled to host the Indonesian experimental rock pioneers Zoo on their first European tour. The volcanic sound of this Yogyakartan band is propelled by two drummers, and Rully Shabara from the mighty Senyawa - Rully Shabara & Wukir Suryadi. Anyone who witnessed Senyawa at Vrooom fest in 2014 should take note. We recently saw Graham Mushnik perform with the Anatolian psych-pop sensation Derya Yıldırım & Grup Simsek and we're curious to see what his other band Guess What has on offer in a live setting. On top of all this we have the premiere of Friso van Wijck's new composition.

ZOO (id | yogyakarta)
Zoo are from the city Yogyakarta which was long considered the center of traditional Javanese culture. Formed in 2005 as heirs of their city's vibrant history, Zoo first emulated the most radical work of various Japanese groups released in the late 80s and early 90s (think Boredoms, Ruins, Melt Banana). On their first EP "Kebun Binatang" (2007), Zoo still played fast-paced, noisy music similar to the above mentioned bands, but with their subsequent full lengths "Trilogi Peradaban" (2009) and "Prasasti" (2012), they've carved out a sound of their own; a crossover between post-punk, experimental rock and noise, traditional percussion and elements of Balinese trance ceremonies. Zoo is propelled by two drummers and also features the inventive vocal power of Rully Shabara, who is known for his work with Senyawa. Zoo is among the true pioneers of Indonesian noise rock experimentation, don't miss them on their first tour through Europe!
• Rully Shabara – vocals, rebana, djembe, synths
• Bhakti Prasetyo – bass
• Ramberto Agozalie – drums
• Dimas Budi Satya – drums, custom percussion

GUESS WHAT (fr/uk)
Since their formation in 2005, the French/English duo Guess What have been touring Europe extensively with their instrumental cosmic grooves. Graham Mushnik and Luke Warmcop are inspired by astronomy, the Space Age, ancient philosophers, 60’s/70’s B-movies, and the sounds of the Middle-East. The masked pair have released three albums that tap into a broad range of influences. Guess What's sound can be best compared with soundtracks that remind us of Francois de Roubaix, Ennio Morricone, Secret Chiefs 3 and others, but their music can hold its own. Warmcop and Mushnik also founded Catapulte Records with Juste Voyant, with whom they play in other bands (Pissinboy, L’Orchestre du Montplaisant). Mushnik just released a belter of a record with Anatolian Psych-Pop sensation Derya Yildirim & Grup Şimşek. All the more reason to keep an eye on this lot.
• Graham Mushnik – organ, synths, melodica
• Luke Warmcop – drums, percussion, trumpet

'Dialogue for one' is one of the newest pieces written by drummer/composer Friso van Wijck, for double bass, electronics and tape ('tape' as in pre-recorded digitized soundfiles anno 2017). The composition will be performed by local (double)bass honcho Gonçalo Almeida.

Thu, March 23: Golden Oriole (STAER) + Celestial Bodies + DJ Arum Super

Our recommendation for this week – SANDWICH ISLAND presents:

– GOLDEN ORIOLE (no / STAER members)
– CELESTIAL BODIES (nl)
– DJ ARUM SUPER (fr)

start: 20.30 | entrance: €7 | presale: €6
location: WORM – Boomgaardsstraat 71, Rotterdam
FB event page
worm.org event page

GOLDEN ORIOLE (no / Staer members)
This duo comprises two-thirds of the mighty Staer, one of the best bands coming out of Norway in the past decade. It may be conjecture but we reckon Staer have won over pretty much every single person that have seen them perform live. The trio first spread its counter-cultural wings in 2008, gradually developing their bizarre bass-heavy instrumental noise rock. Golden Oriole is a direct continuation of Staer, keen on advancing their infectious and hypnotic music. They will release their debut on Drid Machine Records this March. Go see these guys, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
Golden Oriole

CELESTIAL BODIES (nl)
Debut Live show from this unholy union of Vincent Koreman (NIHILL, Drug Culture, etc.) and René Aquarius (Dead Neanderthals). From Nihill they inherited the pitch-black and noise-drenched sound that is deeply rooted in gnosticism and occultism, while they borrowed the avant-garde, free-jazz and improv sensibilities from Dead Neanderthals. Celestial Bodies' debut “Spit Forth From Chaos” is a cacophonous blend of anti-cosmic black metal and raw noise, propelled by an imperious drumming, tossing the listener into a nightmarish dimension where everything is Chaos, and Chaos is everything. The album was released on I, Voidhanger - one of the most adventurous labels currently active in the metal scene.
Spit Forth From Chaos

DJ ARUM SUPER (fr)
DJ arum super is the non-live performance alias of DJ Urine – a Parisian sound artist who creates literal sound collages from fragments of vinyl records. This evening he will 'just' play tunes; spicing up things nicely with a mix of mostly Southeast Asian popular music and various sound oddities. You might hear an instrumental Spazz track with bollywood vocals on top or 50s Japanese easy listening soundtracks mixed with noise.

VROOOM #47

– PAUL CLIPSON / SHINYA SUGIMOTO / JEREMY YOUNG (uk/jp/us)
– MOTABAR - ROESSLER DUO (ir/de)
– THE GARDEN OF FIFTHS AND SIXTHS (nl/uk)
– DJ ÁNGEL PRIOR (es)

location: Pink Pank – Delftsestraat 9, Rotterdam
doors: 20:30 / start: 21:00 / entrance: €6

The 47th Vrooom is a multilayered media event that revolves around the Live Cinema performance 'Total Fiction', a new Sonology duo that creates an audio maze from glitches and poetry, and a new project from the notorious Xentos 'Fray' Bentos, the man that gave homosexuality a good name (in the UK). Last but not least Ángel Prior will be DJ'ing some tunes.

PAUL CLIPSON with SHINYA SUGIMOTO & JEREMY YOUNG presents 'Total Fiction'
[A 16mm film projection event with live improvised score]

• Jeremy Young – reel-to-reel tapes and electronics
• Shinya Sugimoto – piano and electronics
• Paul Clipson – 16mm films

Taking its name from Shinya Sugimoto & Jeremy Young’s forthcoming LP featuring cellist Julia Kent, "Total Fiction" is a live score performance to a 16mm film projection by Paul Clipson that will change night by night in reaction to the properties of each space these artists are performing at. Like all of Clipson’s film collage works, this will be frenetic. It will span movements both in stark black and white and bright analog color. Sugimoto and Young will work to bring out auditory characters, narratives, themes and transitional arcs from the celluloid, while at times challenging the pictures to provide new meaning in new sonic contexts. Shinya Sugimoto performs on piano and Max MSP triggered processing, while Young will be utilizing his analog electronics such as reel-to-reel tape loops, oscillators, AM radio and contact mic’d objects and surfaces to build textural and tonal color palettes throughout the evening.

MOTABAR - ROESSLER DUO (ir/de)
• Sohrab Motabar – live electronics and glitch sounds
• Leonie Roessler – classic guitar, field recordings, soundscapes

Sohrab Motabar (Iran), and Leonie Roessler (originally from Germany) started their collaboration while studying together at the Institute of Sonology. Their duo pieces are improvised within a strictly fixed form, exploring ways of interweaving sound components ranging from harsh and loud to introspective and detailed, creating an unique tapestry of sound. Leonie and Sohrab have performed their works in NL and in cities like Berlin, Tehran, and Isfahan.

THE GARDEN OF FIFTHS AND SIXTHS (nl/uk)
[featuring: Xentos 'Fray' Bentos, Titi Tabarnac & Lee Lagerwall]

The Garden Of Fifths And Sixths is a peculiar assemblage of outsiders. Xentos is the legendary sole artistic survivor of the notorious 'Homosexuals' scene, where bands and records sprouted like poppies before disappearing into the void. Lots of releases of those days survived in obscure rereleases by likewise obscure labels. Xentos has worked with Rotterdam musician Titi Tabarnac as Perfect Vacuum, and made the album 'A Guide to the music of the 21th century'. Scottish artist Luke Fowler made a documentary about Xentos in which the latter refused to appear; 'The way Out'. Under the name 'Harmon Y Phraisier', Xentos made a series of absurdist radioplays for Radio Resonance 104.4 FM. Xentos' work has an overdeveloped pop-sensibility, mixed with a natural feeling for shameless absurdism and virtuoso musicianship gone wrong.

Tue, February 28: Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches) / Maranha / Ferrandini + Cement Shoes + Sebastiano Carghini

Our recommendation for this week – SANDWICH ISLAND presents:

– ZHANG HUNGTAI / MARANHA / FERRANDINI (tw/pt)
– SEBASTIANO CARGHINI (it)
– CEMENT SHOES (Balázs Pándi | Giovanni Di Domenico | Gonçalo Almeida)

Ex- Dirty Beaches / Last Lizard Alex Zhang Hungtai teams up with Portuguese scene mavericks David Maranha and Gabriel Ferrandini. Add to that the high calibre trio Cement Shoes, Italian modular master Sebastiano Carghini, and you'll have an evening of the finest contemporary leftfield music.

ZHANG HUNGTAI (Dirty Beaches) / MARANHA / FERRANDINI (tw/pt)
• Alex Zhang Hungtai – saxophone, vocals and percussion
• David Maranha – organ and percussion
• Gabriel Ferrandini – drums and percussion

This trio was invited by the legendary Blue Note to create new music based around a jazz figure for the Blogoteque website. They chose John Coltrane as their guiding light for a couple of performances well remembered by those fortunate enough to catch them. Their album 'Âncora' has the urgency of Coltrane's most far out recordings while tapping into a new form of lyricism. Since then, the trio has been developing its own language, taking free jazz onto a new path that manages to avoid genre trappings, channeling the Arkestra's spirits through No Wave's physicality. A ritual-like vortex of fiercely rhythmic communal percussion, freeform drones and solemn war cries.

CEMENT SHOES (pt/hu/it)

• Giovanni Di Domenico – Fender Rhodes
• Gonçalo Almeida – bass
• Balázs Pándi – drums

To find mister Almeida, Di Domenico, and Pándi on the same stage is a great thing. These individuals will be cementing and expanding their genre-bending qualities that are inherent in their many other projects; from drone, (post) metal to freejazz; Cement Shoes is a trio where individuality is paramount. Live, this band plays adventurous music that will have you glued to the floor, just like if you would be wearing cement shoes.

SEBASTIANO CARGHINI (it)
Italian modular synth master and performer who also utilizes physical objects in his recordings. Bubbling old school synths that bend their way into infectious patterns that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

VROOOM #46

–– DIRAR KALASH (palestine)
–– KZSZ – KACPER ZIEMIANIN & SEHT ZHAN (pl/br)
–– ROWAN VAN AS (nl) – 'Suspended in lost trumpet time'

location: Pink Pank – Delftsestraat 9, Rotterdam
doors: 20:30 / start: 21:00 / entrance: €6
FB event page

At Vrooom 46 part of the focus for our monthly dose of mind-boggling freeform music moves to Den Haag. Sonologists Kacper Ziemianin and Seht Zhan will engage in a collaborative live set. Dirar Kalash will perform with his oud, and Rowan van As will be battling his collection of instruments.

DIRAR KALASH (Palestine)
Dirar Kalash is a sound artist whose work spans a wide range of sonic practices. His approaches to instruments, techniques, and aesthetics are political as they challenge dichotomies, hierarchies, and binary logics of new/old and west/east as tools of cultural imperialism and hegemony. At Vrooom Dirar will perform with the oud, approaching this lute-type string instrument with different techniques in order to achieve a music that transcends the common notions of traditional oud playing, taking off from the history of the oud, and the history of its development in particular, as a process deeply rooted in movement and dynamics from Ancient Persia and through the Levant and North Africa. These approaches reposition the oud within a context where it is considered not only as an instrument with a deep history, but also as a vehicle for further explorations of musical and sonic languages.
Dirar Kalash youtube

KZSZ - Kacper Ziemianin & Seht Zhan (pl/br)
Duo performance from these two sonology adepts who are currently based in Den Haag. Kacper Ziemianin is a polish sound fashionista, circuit bending psychonaut, instrument developer, squatter, radio star (for Tonka) and workshop hero. Seht Zhan comes from the other end of the big pond; São Paulo, Brazil. He is a kaosmeister, pataphysician, noise entrepreneur, alien authority and according to himself; a 'sonology slacker'.

https://soundcloud.com/setherian

ROWAN VAN AS (nl) – 'Suspended in lost trumpet time'
Rowan is a Rotterdam based musician / artist whose work is intuitive, bordering on outsider art. He forms the band The Asses with his brother Aswin. Rowan's performance piece at this Vrooom will feature pretty much his entire collection of instruments (a trumpet, trombone, French horn, violin, double bass, accordion, etc), whilst revealing himself as a sort of anti-instrumentalist revelling in incapabilities.

–– PETRA DUBACH & MARIO VAN HORRIK (nl)
–– ANNA MIKHAILOVA aka BaKaRuNa (r/nl)

location: Pink Pank – Delftsestraat 9, Rotterdam

Hello new year. Vrooom kicks off this Thursday evening with artists that move within the realm of textured Improv, Noise, New Music, and Sound Art.
FB event

LEILA BORDREUIL (fr)
Leila is a Brooklyn based cellist and composer from Aix-en-Provence, France. She works in the realm of Noise, Improvisation, New Music and Sound-art. Her cello playing is often improvised, and mainly focuses on texture variations and collages of phantom overtones and pitched utterances. Her vocabulary is that of extended techniques, preparations, and imaginative amplification methods, using her instrument as an abstract resonant body to challenge conventional cello practice. Her composed works draw from a similar textured musical aesthetic, but also focus on the relationship between sound and space. In her site-specific electro-acoustic compositions, architecture is the foundation of the piece and musicality arises from an organized spacialization of sound.
www.leilabordreuil.com

PETRA DUBACH & MARIO VAN HORRIK (nl)
Mario and Petra have worked together as an artistic duo Since 1983. The inception was the notion that movement and sound are identical; without movement (vibration) nothing can be heard. This idea, and the temporary character of sound, extends through their installations, site-specific works in progress, performances and concerts. The duo also use new media and technology, often realized especially for their projects. Their recent projects dealt with communication, formal translations, and (mis)understanding. In their research project WAVES, the duo investigates the use of movement feedback to create installations and concerts. Next to being the co-founders / members of the multimedia group Antarctica, Mario was also a member of the renowned Maciunas Ensemble with the late Paul Panhuijsen, Jan van Riet, and Leon van Noorden.

ANNA MIKHAILOVA aka BaKaRuNa (ru/nl)
A performance by Rotterdam-based Russian composer/musician/opera director Anna Mikhailova. Name of the instrument; BaKaRuNa. More info to follow.
