VROOOM #21

Are you in a festive mood or seeking refuge from it? The last VROOOM of the year will put you into that invigorating state of limbo before you surrender to the obligations. With: delicate solo guitar stuff from Xavier Dubois, bloodcurdling improv by Shackle and a drum/dance duet by the iDIOTS Philipp Ernsting and Charlotte Goesaert. All this will be chiseled into form by the impeccable music choice of DJ Ergo Phizmiz. Come, rejoice!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20
location: Klooster!
Hammerstraat 63, Rotterdam
doors/start: 20:30 / curfew: 01:00 / entrance: €6

iDIOTS - CHARLOTTE GOESAERT & PHILIPP ERNSTING (nl)
Oddball duet between drummer Philipp Ernsting and dancer Charlotte Goesaert. Philipp's most excellent skills have impacted in the Rotterdam music scene and far beyond. The name Goesaert must ring a bell with some because of the collaborations with vocal artist / poet Joost Maaskant. With iDIOTS, Ernsting and Goesaert are trying to find their own physical language between punk-ish, poetic dance and off the meter percussion.

XAVIER DUBOIS (be)
Mr. Dubois from Namur started playing guitar in the nineties, secretly desiring to match Keith Richards' playing and songwriting. He then thankfully dropped this ambition to broaden his horizons, learning to play music bordering on jazz and other forms of experimental music. This led him to play with the cool Belgian noise rock band ULTRAPHALLUS and poet/writer/performer Vincent Tholomé. Xavier has become a fine solo guitarist, having carved out a very good reputation through many quality live shows.
http://xavierdubois.bandcamp.com/

SHACKLE (nl)
The duo Shackle = Anne La Berge (flute, electronics) and Robert van Heumen (laptop). At the heart of their duo performance is a self-designed digital cueing system which operates as a sometimes visible third member. Both prodding and reactive, the so-called Shackle system suggests musical directions and textures to play with and against. We imagine it a bit like a Doctor Who episode, with a Dalek commanding uncanny transitions that turn on a dime and long, spun-out tapestries of sound.

DJ ERGO PHIZMIZ (uk)
We welcome back Ergo Phizmiz; the composer, writer, collagist, radio-producer, home opera-maker, performer, and, for this special occassion disc jockey. Ergo's work has been received around the world to critical acclaim, but he somehow still seems to annoy some folks to the point of violence. That means good music!

DEC 5: CHRIS IMLER / TULIP, DIE SINGENDE TULPE / HALLO WERNER CLAN

Continuation of the event series for original pop culture made on German soil. In previous years cult acts like PALAIS SCHAUMBURG, BODENSTÄNDIG 2000, DER PLAN and ECHOKRANK all found their way to 'Ein Abend In WORM'. And guess what, yes, this basically a Vrooom show, so be sure to check it out.

CHRIS IMLER

Chris Imler is a Berlin based performer with a stache fancier than Eroll Flynn's. He has worked with various musicians throughout the years (Peaches, Puppetmastaz, Driver & Driver, Jens Friebe, Oum Shatt, Die Türen, etc.), but recorded his solo debut 'Nervös' only just earlier this year after repeated requests from his current label Staatsakt. Nervös resonated with audiences and pretty much each self respecting German music magazine quickly publicized a headline article about Chris. The record's angular, infectious pop has been that significant, injecting a much needed dose of fun, eccentrism and spontaneity into Germany's musical landscape.

TULIP, DIE SINGENDE TULPE
The ultimate Hamburg scene insider tip. Tulip revolves around the persona of Holger Steen; the artist who doesn't have a homepage, presskit or booking agency. Steen doesn't need all this; once you've seen this 2+ meters tall man dressed up as a tulip, he'll be imprinted in your mind forever. In his solo incarnation, Tulip combines classic singing techniques and odd texts mixed up with accounts of his personal microcosm.

HALLO WERNER CLAN
Germany's weirdest hiphop duo? We saw Hallo Werner Clan aka Benni Bo and Miss Hawaii (the Tokyo-to-Hamburg expat) perform during a recent, rather flaccid cultural event in Hamburg, and the odd couple transformed the whole thing into a messed up party from the get-go. Hallo Werner's 'Wie-auch-immer-Hip-Hop' is a breath of fresh air; total trash Kult to be taken with a grain of salt, or two. Hallo Werner will DJ + perform live.

DJ's KLETSMEIER & TRAPATTONI

These two will play some great, known and lesser known teutonic tunes and more. After all: good 'German' music culture is also about lucidity, political consciousness and breaking the rules, and less about putting the 'B' of the Bratwurst into the music.

doors: 21:00 / start: 21:30 / entrance: €7 (presale: €6)

VROOOM FEST (#20)

The 20th VROOOM event is a jam-packed mini-festival presenting a group of extremely diverse artists that defy genre in music, performance & video. Apocalypse Lauw is a wild and wanton tour de force of Icelandic, American and German artists and musicians staging an amalgam of improvised poetry, noise music and video. Junko & Michel Henritzi will either totally transfix people or have them stagger to the emergency exit; a once-in-a-lifetime experience regardless. The trio Yassin / Sehnaoui / Prins will play unruly live improv filtering through their Lebanese and Dutch practices.

location: WORM - Boomgaardsstraat 71, Rotterdam
doors: 20:00 / start: 20:30 / entrance: €7 (presale: €6)

JUNKO (jp / HIJOKAIDAN) & MICHEL HENRITZI (fr)
We're thrilled to announce the exclusive NL performance of Junko & Michel Henritzi. Junko – 'La Grande Dame du Shriek' – is the vocalist of the Japanese performance art-based cult noise group that has been active since the late seventies. Hijokaidan is as essential to the global noise scene as its other Japanese progenitors (Merzbow, Hanatarash, Incapacitants, Masonna, etc.). Henritzi wanders between noise and abstract 'blues' on guitars and lapsteel. The duo is likely to divide the crowd between total lovers and haters and that's how we like it!

RAED YASSIN / SHARIF SEHNAOUI / GERT-JAN PRINS (lb/nl)
The Yassin / Sehnaoui / Prins trio will do an intense live set combining Lebanese and Dutch practices within improv and electronics. Both Sharif and Raed contributed considerably to the emergence of an unprecedented experimental music scene in Lebanon, which influence is ongoing. They founded the Annihaya and Al Maslakh labels, and together with Mazen Kerbaj they are the organisers of the annual IRTIJAL Festival. Autodidact sound artist Gert-Jan Prins is one of the most challenging knob twiddlers in NL.
• Raed Yassin – double bass and objects
• Sharif Sehnaoui – acoustic guitar and objects
• Gert-jan Prins – electronics

VROOOM #19

• LE CHEVALIER DE RINCHY (fr)• TILDE (it)• SPACE ADVENTURE FROM THE PULP VISION MACHINE (nl)• DJ BOSHOER (nl)

location: Klooster
Hammerstraat 63, Rotterdam
doors / start: 20:30 curfew 01:00 / entrance: €6
https://www.facebook.com/events/794140780636719/

■ LE CHEVALIER DE RINCHY (fr)

Le Chevalier De Rinchy: former positively failed TV talkshow host, one half of Le Club Des Chats (remember that crazy band?), jingle composer and Francophone pop savant. For this Vrooom, Le Chevalier will team up with SCARLATTI GOES ELECTRO's Antoine Souchav and INTERNET2's Carlos Carbonell. What to expect? A great live set of absurdist pop miniatures, adding Souchav's 'baroque' keyboard playing and Carbonell's 'theremin plants'; oddball fun guaranteed!
http://www.lechevalierderinchy.com/
http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Le_Chevalier_De_Rinchy

■ TILDE (it)
Intriguing electro acoustic project from Italy featuring Attila Faravelli, Nicola Ratti and Enrico Malatesta, who are active in the field of contemporary music and sound art. Tilde utilizes 'spare' objects, a snare drum, a cymbal and a few analog synthesizer modules to create / provoke a relationship between artificially produced sounds and sites that happen to grab their musical interest. Tilde's performances are much like interventions (in the open air or in the controlled environment of a stage). Far from being an empty container to their actions, the sites they pick provide some of their unlimited aural possibilities, both imagined and real.
http://tildehome.tumblr.com/

■ SPACE ADVENTURE FROM THE PULP VISION MACHINE (nl)
Total mystery slide show by this looongtime Rotterdammer.

■ dj BOSHOER (fr/nl)
Who else to ask to counteract our other Francophone guests tonight? This bitch from la forêt has a great eclectic taste in music and is keen to deejay 'Boshoer style'. Our faith in the boshoer is strong.

VROOOM #18 - STUBNITZ BENEFIT

VROOOM #18
We're kicking off our fall / winter offensive with a benefit for STUBNITZ, featuring:

▨ PIERRE BASTIEN (fr)
▨ TORTURE CORPSE (nl)
▨ MARGRIET KICKS-ASS (nl)
▨ XAVIER VAN WERSCH (nl)
▨ BASSUKA (pt - Bruno Xavier Ferro Da Silva & Gonçalo Almeida)

This event will mark the end of a Dutch crowdfunding project to save the STUBNITZ from its demise. In other words: we're trying to help the MS STUBNITZ organisation in the prevention of not being able to keep their ship afloat:

On the 1th of September, 2014 the MS STUBNITZ had to be docked for class renewal in the Norderwerft - a very costly affair, which the non-profit association cannot manage to generate on its own.

The Stubnitz is an 80 meters long ex- East German fishing vessel, transformed in 1992 into a moving platform for cultural research and exchange; in the Netherlands it moored in Rotterdam and Amsterdam on a regular basis, providing space & opportunities for a lot of cultural events to take place. A diverse range of disciplines including performance, theatre, dance, spoken word, lots of music and parties. An incredible number of artists were able to perform on the STUBNITZ.

–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

We (Margriet Kicks-Ass & Lukas Simonis, one of the Vrooom initiators) have decided to put together a compilation album called „SOS STUBNITZ“.

Representatives of the Dutch experimental music scene support the MS STUBNITZ in support of the crowdfunding project, not only financially, but also in spirit.

The „SOS STUBNITZ“ compilation of dutch experimental artists was initiated & produced in less than a week's time. We hope it will generate a lot of money for the Stubnitz crew but it is also meant as a way of giving moral support to a great ship, it's activities and it's great crew...

Track contributions: Xavier van Wersch, Anne Wellmer, Vilborg Broch, Truus de Groot, Staplerfahrer, Staalplaat soundsystem, Robert Pravda, Radboud Mens, POW Ensemble, Peter Fengler, Michel Banabila, Paralodia, Nico Parlevliet, Martin Hoogeboom en Theo Calis, Marije Baalman, Machinefabriek, Jos Smolders, Huib Emmer, Henk Bakker, Harry Hummer, Vincent Koreman, Bertin, AU, Alberto Novello, Zesde Kolonne, Jaap Blonk, Lukas Simonis en Margriet Kicks-Ass.

ZS in Rotterdam - 11.10.2014

New York luminaries ZS will be stopping in Rotterdam at Worm for their only performance in Holland during their upcoming European tour. We wholeheartedly recommend this show, and not just because one of us is behind this.
This IS going to be one of the best shows you'll be able to witness in the next few months!

"
It’s ZS playing this music that sounds like outerspace, it’s ZS playing intense live shows you’ll never forget, it’s ZS always having a great line-up, it’s ZS what you call Jazz but it’s not, it’s ZS touring europe for a few days..."

Initially Vrooom #17 was intended to be just a fun, self-indulgent, navel gazing little event by us and our immediate circle of friends, but it gradually snowballed into a mini festival for all. A Vrooom season closing party, if you will. A good alternative for those who still are around town early July, undesiring stressful trips abroad or having to choose between 200 acts a day at festival XYZ. So take it easy, come down south, and hear cool local performers, international veterans and exciting newcomers wrestle it out in the laid-back ambiance of B.a.d. Foundation.

• SENYAWA (Jogjakarta, Indonesia)
One of THE most anticipated Live shows of the season. Find out what rootsy music from Indonesia sounds like given the unorthodox 'Boredoms-esque' treatment. Coming from the ancient city Jogjakarta, central Java, Indonesia, Senyawa aka Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi filter their traditional Javanese heritage through a framework of contemporary experimental music practices. They push the boundaries of both traditions in an attempt to mix the musics’ of the east and the west to create a new sound. It's cerebral and visceral, and a serious must see/hear command is in order.
http://senyawa.tumblr.com/

• CHAKAI HOUSE (uk)
Part Wild Horses Mane On Both Sides' Pascal Nichols is also Chakai House: an improvised drum performance of rudimentary polyrhythms and amplified percussion. Nichols is a self-taught, free-thinking drummer and sound artist from Manchester. His playing is both reductive and high-energy, and born out of a love for prog rock, free jazz, and ritualistic music. Nichols has recorded and performed with fellow nutters such as e.g. Phil Minton, Ludo Mich, and Harappian Night Recordings.
http://pascalnichols.tumblr.com/

• ERGO PHIZMIZ (uk)
Ergo is a hero. Ergo-Hero. To his detriment these times are not made for heroes, unfortunately. In Ergo's case, the hero is a beautiful young man who can sing, dance and throw in a decent conversation as well. But why this urge to worship him? Well, just because he writes brilliant songs, makes very good radio plays and wears nice clothes. Which is more than you can say for the rest of the world population.
http://www.ergophizmiz.net/

• COOLHAVEN (nl)
This legendary Rotterdam trio can rock like a ...uhhhh rock, can perform like your worst nightmare, will finally play a 'soothing' set with new and old (well, yes, you can call it) music. They will likely put on skirts and moustaches just like in the old days when they were young, beautiful and dominated...
http://coolhaven.hotglue.me/

• HASSAN K (ir)
A mystical one man band from Persia who sometimes goes by the name of Keyvane Alinaghi. The prince of Persia mixes occident and orient, surf music and bellydance, swing and heavy metal. Armed with a guitar, a keyboard and a few sensors, he travels from the Turan to the Western kingdom, to spread the words of his illuminated ancestors…
http://hassan-k.com/

• SWEAT TONGUE (nl)
Sweat Tongue are the great hope of the Rotterdam Underground Foundation Theory (R.U.F.T.). This band does things on stage that could be contagious and might transform this stupid old town into something as cool as Berlin or Magdenburg, musically speaking that is. Who needs ladders, guitars or things to bang on if you have a sweaty tongue?
http://sweattongue.hotglue.me/

• VIALKA (fr/ca)
The post-genre guitar and percussion duo Vialka is named after a hole in the ground somewhere on the Russian prairie. They must be the ultimate touring band cause it takes less time to name the places they haven't visited: Antartica, Greenland, Hawaii, Liechtenstein, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan. Did I forget something? On stage, Vialka display great chemistry and put everything they find on their extensive tours back into their music; folksy stuff from all over the world, punk, improv, chanson and whatnot...
http://vialka.com/

• MACHINEFABRIEK (nl)
We placed a special factory order and asked Machinefabriek to churn out standardized, low-cost sounds which we could afford to program, and would also be tailored for our audience's wages (see also: Fordism In Music). More good news: it has been determined that 90 minutes is the perfect length for this purpose.
http://www.machinefabriek.nu/

• NINA HITZ and ANNA MIKHAILOVA (ch/ru)
Russian / Swiss duo that will play acoustic improv with cello and koto. Nina is more of a Baroque chick while Anna has a background in music theatre (http://korzo.nl/nl/producties/constant-tranzit). This cooperation will probably result in very subtle Cagean gestures mixed with cheesy swiss baroque chainsawing and Russian koto banging.

• DESNUDA MONSIEUR MADAME (ru - aka Alexander Brener and Barbara Schurz)
Alexander Brener and Barbara Schurz are self-taught artists whose works include autobiographical novels, pamphlets, cartoons, graffiti, frescos, poems and other 'Kunststuecke'. Brener was jailed in 1997 for painting a green dollar sign on Kazmir Malevich' painting 'Suprematisme'. Recently they self-published 3 picture-books about rebellious and unruly girls. Now they are working on a funny pornographic novel called 'Cabaret Flaubert'.

• DJ CHARLATAN PHILISTINE (de)

Jobless immigrant truckdriver, now on a mission to become the 2nd best dj in the world to pay his bills. While he's not likely to challenge David Guetta or dj Fill In The Blank, we're convinced he can steal just about enough good music in time to play at this event.

• DJ THIERRY CHAMPIGNON (nl)

Self-proclaimed walking jukebox. Provides perfect muzak to fill voids inbetween the live perforances.

BLACK PUS & JULIE MITTENS in Rotterdam - 26.06.2014

Highly recommended show organised by one of our programmers:

Brian Chippendale, drummer of the "amplified tribe of two” Lightning Bolt, is BLACK PUS. Chippendale's solo project is maximalist rock music out of frenzied drumming, vocals and phat bass grooves blubbering out of an oscillator triggered by his kick drum. This Thursday, June 26th with Leiden's psych rock pride in Worm, Rotterdam.

Vrooom #16

FRIDAY JUNE 6, 2014

VROOOM 16:
GUSTAVO COSTA (pt)
– DJ URINE (fr)
– OYO & MMTHS (bg/at)
NAN WANG (cn)
– GOZ (pt)
+ dj lndpnd

location: Klooster
Hammerstraat 63, Rotterdam
doors / start: 20:30 / entrance: €6

After our April excursions to both De Player and Worm, we're back at Klooster Oude Noorden with a fine new program! Our homecoming event will feature the latest projects of local Piet Zwart Institute / Filmwerkplaats disciples Nan Wang and Yoana Buzova, Portugese imports Gustavo Costa and Gonçalo Almeida, and more! An evening of superglued Fisher-Price turntablism, dust fetishism, cavernous drones, percussion and interesting visual works.

• GUSTAVO COSTA (pt)
If it's any indication, we know this multitalented percussionist from one of his many different projects; Most People Have Been Trained To Be Bored. We used a contribution of this band for a radio show produced with Worm back in 2005; a wonderful cross section compilation on the then blossoming experimental music scene in Portugal. Fact is, that vibrant bacalhau energy never faded, which prompted this booking. Solid stuff!
http://www.gustavocosta.pt/

• DJ URINE (fr)
Parisian sound artist who creates literal sound collages from fragments of vinyl records. From pizza slice like shards to mosaics, these are assembled in various hands-on methods, then played on 1 to 7 customized turntables, to build up rhythms, loops and textures out of many different musical genres. Sped-up Bollywood vocals can be heard over corrupted bars of Zappa, French folk songs, spoken word guitar tutors and breakcore, resulting in a delightfully imaginative chaotic barrage of sounds. Urine collaborated with e.g. Kawabata Makoto (Acid Mothers Temple), Otto Von Schirach, Senyawa, etc.
http://cargocollective.com/djurine/

• OYO & MMTHS (bg/at)

[OYO - multiprojector module pilot / MMTHS - soundroneaut]
Special one-off pairing of OYO (Yoana Buzova) and MMTHS (Matthias Hurtl), who will experiment with sound and images of 16 mm found footage; manipulating banal educational films, searching for ghost satellites, lost cosmonauts and black holes.

NAN WANG (cn)
Nan Wang is a Chinese media artist and experimental filmmaker. In the past six years she has been producing abstract video and sound works, and installations. Currently fixated on something seemingly mundane as dust collected in her bedroom, her performance for Vrooom #16 will be exploring the usage of this particular micro-physical material in image and sound.
http://nanwang.org/

GOZ (pt)
[Gonçalo Almeida - bass / Thorben van Nu - live visuals]
Gonçalo Almeida is one of the busiest bees in Rotterdam's music scene, and when he's not in, he's touring the EU exhaustively. For this evening, he will be dropping his duties for Albatre and his gazzilion other projects and play a cavernous ambient solo set accompanied by live visuals. Think Sunn O))) being raped by the ghost of Robert Johnson in a drunken brawl.

Vrooom #15 @ Worm

SUNDAY, APRIL 20
location: Vrooom @ WORM
Boomgaardsstraat 71, Rotterdam
doors 19:30 / start: 20:30 / door 6,- / presale 5,-

https://www.facebook.com/events/701226933233565/

While Vrooom is temporarily exiled from its usual location during April, Worm will give room to its program during this evening.
The program: the cream of the crop of the Rotterdam and ex- Rotterdam underground, with experimental pop, evocative ambient and moody improv/jazz.

• LASSE PASSAGE (no)
Multitalented
pop experimentalist / singer/songwriter Lasse Passage is back in town. This former long-term Rotterdam resident is slowly stepping into the limelight with his recent achievements. The Dutch quality label Eat Concrete is currently releasing a mini-album tetralogy (that's four records being put out in a series). The first volume 'Stop Making Sense And Start Making Success' came out last January. Lasse creates intricate and original songs, juxtaposing bittersweet lyrics with lo-fi and minimal music. A multi-layered musical journey that remains refreshing and highly accessible throughout.
http://www.lassepassage.com/
https://www.facebook.com/LassePassage
http://www.eatconcrete.net/

• COSTA ERNSTING (nl)
Hugo Costa & Philipp Ernsting form a new free jazz/improvisation duo from Rotterdam. Their music is created in and from the moment, resulting in a fine blend that can be both noisy and violent, sometimes melodic and subtle. Both musicians are skilled and very empathetic players, and enjoy exploring the interplay and space between pure rhythm, lyricism and harmony. The music is intended to always move forward and surprise.
https://soundcloud.com/hugofialhocosta

• BARHÛS (nl)
Beautiful, hazy ambient from Keimpe Koldijk, one of Rotterdam's main underground players. Barhûs' sound is partly improvised; minimal threads of funeral pace synths and droning guitars are processed through reverb and thin clouds of tape noise. Carefully placed notes gradually take the listener through the reminiscences of past gaiety. Think: Andrew Chalk (earlier works) or Grouper. Barhûs refers to the small village in which Koldijk's parental house was situated. This place was his main source of inspiration, looking at it from an entirely different perspective while living in Rotterdam-Zuid.

Vrooom #14 @ De Player

Hillelaan 49d, Rotterdam (just besides Rijnhaven metro station)
doors / start: 20:30

https://www.facebook.com/events/636946406343217/

While Vrooom is temporarily exiled from its usual location during April, our orphan home on the 8th will be the comfy hut of De Player. This evening we'll be piecing together another quality mini circus of sound & vision, always good for a surprise. Extra noteworthy: ZS mastermind Diamond Terrifier will do a dj set as well as a Live set!

• DIAMOND TERRIFIER (us)
Musician, DJ & curator Sam Hillmer is widely known for being the mind behind the influential Brooklyn noise band/chamber ensemble ZS. Diamond Terrifier is Sam’s saxophone and electronics solo incarnation which sits at the intersection of ambient drone, world bass and sound system music, and the many great non-western saxophone traditions. Diamond Terrifier has four releases under its belt; the tapes ‘Himalayan Appalachia’ and 'Shrine Flu’, and the full lengths ‘Kill The Self That Wants To Kill Yourself ’ on Northern Spy (label formed by the former staff of the legendary ESP-Disk’ imprint), produced by Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear, and 2013's ' The Subtle Body Wears A Shadow'.

• GHOSTRIDE (nl)
Brand new project from the Rotterdam based electronica explorers / producers Huib Emmer and Henk Bakker. This duo will perform a strongly sferic and beat driven electro-accoustic set with bass clarinet and Live electronic devices.
http://hekvibes.com/
http://huibemmer.com/

• PHILIPPE CAVALERI (be)
Philippe Cavaleri is a visual & sound artist from Belgium whose past exhibitions & performances have been the focal point for many events across Europe. One of his works was selected by the late Jan Hoet for the 2009 edition of Tempus Arti. His contribution for this evening will be a Live performance of his newest piece 'En temps réel', based on the experimentation with cassettes and super 8 found footage; re-composing this media from "banality to poetry".

VROOOM in APRIL!

Due to the some planning restrictions during weekdays at het Klooster, Vrooom will be presenting its next two events at DE PLAYER and WORM. Yeah, that's right, we have TWO events coming up next month! Check out the FB links below for extensive info, we'll report about these events seperately on these pages soon.

Tuesday, April 8:
VROOOM #14 de player - Hillelaan 49d, Rotterdam
• DIAMOND TERRIFIER (us / Sam Hillmer of Zs)

Vrooom #13

FRIDAY MARCH 14

location: Het Klooster
Hammerstraat 63, Rotterdam
doors / start: 20:30

https://www.facebook.com/events/269216459900532/

Like most of the previous Vrooom programs revealed, we're keen to incorporate visual elements to add to the diversity of things. Vrooom #13 will offer a nice balance between the visual and the auditory. Both disciplines will feed off each other, contract and expand in a visceral setting. Rupture and tear, Gud er Kvinde, God is a Woman; believe.

p.s. Note that due to planning restrictions during weekdays, this event will be last Vrooom event that will take place at Klooster until May 2014!

• GUD ER KVINDE (dk)
Gud Er Kvinde is Danish for 'God is female'. This power baritone sax & trombone duo is comprised of Johannes Lund & Maria Bertel, who have strong ties to the seminal Danish YOYOOYOY collective and the MAYHEM venue in Copenhagen. Johannes did a killer solo saxophone performance as 'Johns Lunds' during Vrooom #3 (March 2013), and we're super excited to have him back at Vrooom. Maria Bertel may have recently come to your attention starring in the excellent four-piece SELVHENTER. With Gud Er Kvinde, Lund and Bertel keep themselves at the forefront of the Danish and international experimental music scene.

• AVERY TINNITUS (ch)
Avery Tinnitus is an intriguing project by Nikola Mounoud (aka '...') and Kusty ( Aloïs Wismer). It's creators are all about the pure Live treatment of visual (16mm film) and sound (both digital & analog) materials. They merge Live performance, cinema, and the concept of installation into a visceral Live dynamic. The 16mm (found) footage Mounoud and Wismer use were unearthed from various archives in the past fifteen years; the films are from the 1920's up to current times. Besides Avery Tinnitus, the duo also run an open space dedicated to DIY photo & cinema in Lausanne, Switzerland.

• CITY HANDS (nl)
Audio-visual artist & performer from Den Haag presenting a piece for slide projectors, voice, tape, effects and objects. City hands aka Manuel Padding has been making a name for himself for quite some years now, starting out as an event organiser in Den Haag with the Helbaard collective until circa 2008 and continuing afterwards at various other locations. He still is Den Haag's go-to person in the field of experimental, out-there underground music. Next to being an event organiser he also runs the Silver Ghost label and most recently co-hosted the much lauded Kraak festival.

• DJ PAZ (nl)
Chef Paz aka Pascal Walhof will serve up the finest Kaseko, Bollywood, Tijuana, Exotica and more before, between and after the Live sets!

Vrooom #12

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 14

location: Het Klooster
Hammerstraat 63, Rotterdam
doors / start: 20:30
entrance: tba

https://www.facebook.com/events/196836510524622/

Coming up: the February edition! Witness Belgian / Dutch sound objects & selfbuilt instruments galore by Jochem Baelus aka Slumberland and Good Cop / Naughty Cop. Plus: visitations from Belgian's Fluxus legend Ludo Mich and our favorite self indulgent asshole from deep down south of R'dam...Vrooom!

• LUDO MICH (be)
Antwerp based Fluxus artist / performer and filmmaker who's total output perhaps amounts to something different altogether. Ludo has been active since the 1960s and describes himself as a 'Holo-man' (from Greek: 'Holos'); a 'multi-D artist' who travels in multiple dimensions, disturbing all five senses, up to the sixth and further. From early on, he incorporated all fields of art into his work that referred to science, albeit in a psychedelic, mythical and absurd way, with a good dose of messed up humor. The running theme is the experimentation with sound, light waves and motion. During the sixties he made 'talking' coats, floors and had a piece that consisted of a shadow, producing music with photoelectric cells. Dennis Tyfus' Ultra Eczema has been instrumental bringing Ludo Mich back to attention, releasing an lp edited from the soundtracks of Ludo's pansexual aktionist films. Because of this wave of exposure, recent years have seen Ludo Mich collaborating with, e.g. Dylan Nyoukis, Kommissar Hjuler and Wolf Eyes.

• SLUMBERLAND (be)
Belgian musician / filmmaker Jochem Baelus developed his craft out of the love/hate relationship with technology and by not using classic instruments. As Slumberland he makes sound objects from mundane objects, reassigns their function, and turns sewing machines, hair dryers and fans into mechanical drum machines, strings and more undefined DIY sound installations. The music is drone based, deconstructed songs driven by industrial, tribal-ish beats.

• GOOD COP / NAUGHTY COP (nl)
= code for ‘Piece for Two Bicycle Wheels, Two Guitars’. This duo creates instant ambient noise with self-programmed software and self-made controllers. Because of the physical approach using 'nostalgic' bicycles and radios, there is a strong nudge to performance art. Current members are Sjoerd Leijten and Patrick Bossink.

• GILBERT VAN DRUNEN (nl)
Visual artist, musician, installationist and self-proclaimed indulgent asshole performance artist. Gilbert is also one half of the band Two Dogs and converted part of his home and studio into LE SUD, where this good samaritan hosts cool events with numerous other artists.

3 Electronica's @ De Player

Yes, it's short notice but this might be of interest to you: our friends De Player are hosting an event tonight with Lorah Pierre, Ewa Justka and Poulomi Desai; three upcoming artists who's common goal is the "development of self-built electronic devices for the use of making sound in a sculptural and performative way. All three of them will demonstrate their own solutions."
Starts from 20:30 in the south of heaven, Rotterdam.

Vrooom #11

TUESDAY JANUARY 14

PROBOSCI (TIMBA HARRIS & GYAN RILEY / us)
L'ŒILLÈRE (fr)
BENEATH THE BLANKET (dk)
dj BOSHOER (fr)

location: Het Klooster
Hammerstraat 63, Rotterdam
doors / start: 20:30
entrance: €5

https://www.facebook.com/events/636629729733236/

Vrooom will usher in it's new year with an NL exclusive by Probosci; Timba Harris of Secret Chiefs 3, Gyan Riley and L'Œillère from France. A fitting start to the new season!

■ PROBOSCI (TIMBA HARRIS & GYAN RILEY / us)
Probosci is a new collaboration between guitarist Gyan Riley (EVIYAN, TERRY RILEY) and violinist Timba Harris (SECRET CHIEFS 3, ESTRADASPHERE). Both composers, whose work is featured in John Zorn’s Tzadik Records Composers’ Series, contribute to the interplay between composition and improvisation, steeped with intricacy, subtlety, and shape-shifting energy. They adventurously explore the sonic landscape, from purely acoustic music to unfamiliar electroacoustic textures, able to dance between delicacy and aggression.

■ L'ŒILLÈRE (fr)
Nicolas Gardrat developed a style of compositions that he dubs “barbaric classical (solo) guitar”. The Former Bordeaux, now Bruxelles based artist was first accompanied by a violinist, playing a repertoire called "les Memoires de l'Oeil”, inspired by ramshackle rock, judeo-arabic and contemporary music but decided to go solo after two years.

■ BENEATH THE BLANKET (dk)
BTK aka Nikolaj de Haan Mikkelsen is a Rotterdam based Codarts student who concocts his immersive ambient with a battery of synths, samplers and effect machines. A jumping-off point could be just one singular sine wave, to which Nikolaj gradually adds his sample library of field recordings. The music is accompanied by quirky visuals, where the computer also gets a chance to improvise with various video clips and effects reacting to the music. Might remind you of Eno and Tape (Häpna label).

■ dj BOSHOER (fr)
We wonder what 'Boshoer' actually means to our francophone guest. This bitch from la forêt is rumoured to be a skilled AND friendly soundguy from another Rotterdam venue. It's his night off and he's keen to demonstrate his oddball ideas about 'party' music. Our faith in the boshoer is strong.
