VROOOM #26
w/
– CHRIS CORSANO & METTE RASMUSSEN (dk/us)
– PETER JACQUEMYN & GONÇALO ALMEIDA (be/nl)
– IEKE TRINKS (nl)
– DJ SAJJRA (pe)
DE PLAYER will be spooning us this evening while we're regaining our
balance after our exit from our main location, Klooster. Business will
center around the ultra detailed, pleasantly derailed interplay between
bass, drums, sax and peformance art. Corsano and Rasmussen will be
pushing the limits of the classic sax/drums set-up, Jacquemyn and
Almeida will be doing the same with their bottom ends. Visual artist
Ieke Trinks will add that extra pinch of variety.
location: DE PLAYER - Hillelaan 49d, Rotterdam
doors: 20:30 / curfew: 01:00 / entrance: €6

■ CHRIS CORSANO & METTE RASMUSSEN (us/dk)
You're in for a premier league live set from these two! If you haven't
witnessed Chris Corsano's playing by now, you have been sorely missing
out. The extremely multifaceted drummer has been operating at the
vanguards of free improvisation, avant-rock, and noise since the late
'90s. He has worked with one-of-a-kind artists such Evan Parker, Sir
Richard Bishop, Nels Cline, Björk, and Jandek, and showcased his high
energy, textural playing in the Rotterdam live circuit on several
occasions before, performing with Paul Flaherty, and others. Mette
Rasmussen is a Danish saxophone player with an impressive track record.
She operates from Trondheim, Norway. Drawing from the energy of free
jazz, her playing has been described as a head full of ideas, that she
executes to the maximum.

■ PETER JACQUEMYN & GONÇALO ALMEIDA (be/nl)
Rotterdam's most productive double bassman Gonçalo Almeida teams up
with Belgium's Peter Jacquemyn for an exploration of the bottom ends.
Peter moves beautifully between visual arts and music. As a sculptor he
assaults tree trunks with axe and chainsaw, and his concerts are a sonic
match: with unbridled energy he wrestles his double bass using bows,
soda cans, plastic bags, crumpled paper, mutes, horns, retuned
strings... All of this ranges Peter Jacquemyn among Belgium's most
interesting improvisers.

■ IEKE TRINKS (nl)
Rotterdam based visual artist whose live art is made manifest in
different ways. As a solo performer, she has run through a large stack
of copy paper, tossing it into the air, or used her breath to blow dry a
piece of tissue paper. For Trinks performance art sometimes shares
characteristics with the musical score. In other live actions she has
solicited audience involvement. She once emptied the bag of an audience
member by placing the items carefully onto the floor of a gallery space
in Brazil. Trinks organizes Performance Art Event (PAE) in Rotterdam and
works in collaboration with the improvisation troupe, TRICKSTER.

■ DJ SAJJRA (pe)
DJ Sajjra, Co-founder of the Aloardi collective from Lima / Peru, will
play a crossbreed of roughed up, processed Andean folk, Peruvian chicha
cumbia, bits of new/no wave, post-apocalyptic pop, basically all kinds
of obscure but very very tasteful South American stuff from the sixties
til now. This stuff will surely get you going one way or another!

"And the atmosphere. The room loved him, clapped along, went as silent
as a mouse when he dropped the tone. What a gig. Frankly this could have
gone on all night. Vrooom! should have kidnapped him and forced him to
stay for the week." Review by Incendiary Mag.

Our 25th! The coolest artist to come out of Denmark in years and an experimental folk artist from Newcastle? The live sets of Frisk Frugt and Richard Dawson should floor everyone, but if that's not enough, there's the musical itchings of mathematician Lali Barrière and veteran soundartist Alfredo Costa Monteiro (aka Blaast), and let's not forget the 'Muito Bam Bam' tunage of DJ Multifunctionelis!
We've relocated our 25th event to a new place in Rotterdam:

■ FRISK FRUGT (dk)
Frisk Frugt is Anders Lauge Meldgaard, a Danish multi-instrumentalist /
composer with a kaleidoscope of musical inspiration at his command.
Frisk Frugt emerged out of Copenhagen's influential experimental music
collective yoyooyoy, where he was involved in numerous projects. On the
back of these achievements, Anders delved deep into folkloric Denmark
and went on to absorb the thrilling musical happenings in Mali and
Burkina Faso. His most recent album "Den Europæriske Spejlbue",
documents this; we can vividly imagine captain Anders, best of the
class, setting sail for music’s uncharted universe with boundless
curiosity: Danish folksong, European baroque, psych, avant-garde and pop
music get beautifully collaged together. A one man post-digital fantasy
orchestra, and one of our personal highlights of the year!

■ RICHARD DAWSON (uk)
Songs. Bloody good songs with a twist, that's what mister Dawson is
about. Richard is a guitar player / songwriter from Newcastle upon Tyne,
England. His repertoire is a far cry from the plague of whiny
singer-songwriters infesting the planet. Only a few people outside
Newcastle had a clue who Richard was some three years ago, but after a
couple of great albums and many highly acclaimed live performances, he's
being embraced by press and fans alike. Listen to his intense,
discordant and captivating reconfiguration of English folk and guitar
traditions. Chances are you'll be a fan in an instant.

■ BLAAST (Lali Barrière & Alfredo Costa Monteiro | es/pt)
The music of the duo sound/visual art veterans Lali Barrière and
Alfredo Costa Monteiro promises to be a delicate electro-acoustic
affair. It is roughly based on continuous, overlapping sounds that
slowly evolve, eventually forming an intense, time stretching sonic mass
that is rich in harmonics... the music of the duo resembling a journey
out of time.

■ DJ MULTIFUNCTIONELIS (nl)
Low Point Drains bandmember who is mostly away from R'dam, business tripping in Southeast Asia. He will do some super fun “Muito Bam Bam" DJ'ing; rough but dancable Afro-via-India-via-Sri Lanka tunage mixed up with bits of jarring avant stuff.

■ HACO &TONIC TRAIN (jp/de/uk)
Haco is an influential vocalist, composer, sound artist from Kobe,
Japan. She is a founding member of the classic After Dinner (1981-1991)
and Hoahio, released countless records, and collaborated with Fred
Frith, Acid Mothers Temple, Otomo Yoshihide, Cassiber, and many others.
With her unique sensibility, Haco has developed a practice based on
principles of post-punk, electroacoustics, the avant-garde, improv,
post-rock, environmental sound, and technology. She is about to release
her new album 'Secret Garden' in March. Haco will collaborate live with
TONIC TRAIN, the longstanding experimental electronics duo of Sarah
Washington and Knut Aufermann.

■ SINTA RUQYAY YUYANA aka TOMÁS TELLO (pe)
Tomás Tello is a Peruvian sound artist who currently lives in
Luxembourg. His work is deeply inspired by ancient forms of music and
environmental sounds. He is interested in the qualities of multiplicity
in musicianship, using a varied set of instruments that include D.I.Y.
electronics, walkmans, guitars, samplers, flutes, bells, etc. A close
relationship with the sounds that surround us is a key element in his
material. Tomás also runs the highly interesting Andesground tape label.

■ BEEQUEEN (nl)
In the fickle world of pop music Beequeen forms an extraordinary
beacon. Their fragile sound balances on the fine thread that links
experiment with pop. The result is 26 years of surreal dream-pop,
documented on over twenty albums. Beequeen's core has essentially been
Frans de Waard and Freek Kinkelaar since 1988. The duo added singer Olga
Wallis to the line-up in 2007, her warm and intimate voice being the
perfect icing on the cake. This evening the band will be performing as a
four-piece.

■ SARAH PHELAN & EVA BOWAN (au/pl/uk)
Sarah Phelan and fellow Brighton based artist Eva Bowan are currently
undertaking a residency at the Worm / Klangendum sound studio. Eva is a
Polish born artist who combines analogue and digital techniques, both in
visual and sonic art. She creates lush ambient soundscapes. Sarah
originally comes from Melbourne, and operates as DRILL FOLLY, her solo
experimental electronica project. Phelan and Bowan will be demonstrating
the results of their studio collaboration at Vrooom.

VROOOM #23
with:
- ANDY MOOR (uk) & YANNIS KYRIAKIDES (gr)
- DANIEL LEVIN (us) & MAT MANERI (us)
- NYRD - FRISO VAN WIJCK (nl)
It's hard not to brag about this VROOOM line up; the adventurous string
sounds of jazz/improv greats Daniel Levin and Mat Maneri (duo set), the
disparate rebetiko experimentalism from Andy Moor and Yannis
Kyriakides, and the premiere of Friso van Wijck's electronica tape
piece, we kid you not, it's all great stuff!
location: Klooster
doors: 20:30 / curfew: 01:00 / entrance: €6
░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░░
■ ANDY MOOR (uk) & YANNIS KYRIAKIDES (gr)
Yannis Kyriakides (electronics) and Andy Moor (guitar / The Ex)
lovingly dis- and reassemble Rebetika in their unique live set. The
duo's original take on this powerful early 20th century Greek "blues"
encompasses a wide scope of musical vision. Andy's guitar playing is
layered on top of a sonic backdrop of scratchy old Rebetika record
samples and electronics supplied by Kyriakides. The dope induced haze of
bouzoukis, the distant wail of this Greek urban folk, and the
contemporary influences will most definitely mesmerize you.

http://unsounds.com/
■ MAT MANERI (us)
During his twenty-five year career, Mat Maneri has defined the voice of
the viola and violin in jazz and improvised music. The Brooklyn born
musician is widely praised for his original mix of jazz and microtonal
music. His work as an improviser is informed by a vast knowledge of
baroque violin music and chamber music, that continues to shape his
approach to solo and ensemble improvisation. Maneri has worked with 20th
century icons such as Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, Paul Motian, William
Parker, etc.
■ DANIEL LEVIN (us)
Daniel Levin from
Burlington, Vermont is a cellist, improviser and composer. His physical
approach to his instrument has earned him many praise. Levin occupies a
musical space bordered by many kinds of music, but fully defined by none
of them. Elements of European classical music, American jazz,
microtonal and new music, and European free improv all figure
prominently in his unique sound. At Vrooom, Levin will be linking his
cello wizardry to the violin/viola sounds of Mat Maneri in a duo set.

■ 'NYRD' – FRISO VAN WIJCK (Rotterdam)
The premiere of Friso van Wijck's new electronica tape piece entitled
'Nyrd'. This meticulous composition by the renowned drummer/composer is
partly about large gestures that nevertheless contain a lot of detail
and movement. Picture a moment of impact, a gazillion small sound
particles giving way to (as) many contrapuntal possibilities, eventually
resulting in -or interrupted by- another collision... a search for a
new musical form.

LOS DANSING QUEENC (nl)
INDICATOR2000 (at)
FANFARE VOOR VOORUITSTREVENDE VOLKSMUZIEK (nl)
FRIDAY, JANUARY 16
location: Klooster
Hammerstraat 63, Rotterdam
doors: 20:30 / curfew: 01:00 / entrance: €6
https://www.facebook.com/events/1017654778260899/
We kick off the new year with a particularly off-key program. Maastricht's Los Dansing Queenc are coming to bin your last remaining notions about music vs art with their anything but straight forward performance. Joseph Knierzinger, an expat from Austria, is basically David Copperfield with computer mice. Kubelblitz, the editor of the stenciled art newspaper L'Intolérant, will bring his assembly of mystery fanfare musicians. Surprises guaranteed but don't forget to bring a sense of humor.
LOS DANSING QUEENC (nl)
Los Dansing Queenc [sic] are a phenomenon. Sprouting from the moldy hotbed of culture, Maastricht, Los Dansing Queenc might be the best kept secret in the Dutch music and art scene. This completely derailed band play absurdist pop with the dryest sense of humor, and dabble with performance art for good measure. They freed themselves from any preoccupation with what their stuff should sound or look like, sometimes resembling Rotterdam's Coolhaven from another, particularly warped parallel universe. Los Dansing Queenc will provide plenty of entertainment for the curious, jaded and faded.
http://www.losdq.com/
https://www.facebook.com/pages/LosDQ/110955685586970
INDICATOR2000 (at)
An entirely different kind of affair is 'Indicator2000'. This project by the artist and (quote) dilettantish (unquote) engineer Joseph Knierzinger explores different kinds of micro and marco movements of the X-Y indicator device, aka the computer mouse. By translating these movements into amplitude and frequency of a nofi-oscillator, an audible experience is created. By recording variable sequences of the movement an arythmic collage will be discovered.
http://indicator2000.nospace.at/
FANFARE VOOR VOORUITSTREVENDE VOLKSMUZIEK (nl)
Mysterious project by the even more mysterious Woodstone Kugelblitz. Next to setting up the abovementioned fanfare project with homemade trumpets, Kugelblitz is known for activities that includes ongoing work on L'Intolérant - a stenciled newspaper on art in daily life, poetry and popular uprising. Kubelblitz is all about work that is 'lived' instead of work that is being 'created'.

DUCKFOOD (nl)
Duckfood told us that he doesn't like the abbreviation
'DJ' in front of his alias, but he actually is one. It's because the
man loathes pigeonholing and rightly so. So do we. Under Duckfood's
scrutiny, the boundless juxtaposition and mixing of tracks always ends
up being something really tasteful.
