Friday 24 May - Klangendum presents: 'Asvogels van Roffa' – V/A perform scores inspired by Ernö Kiràly

Klangendum presents:

Dutch composer/musician Hans 'Hansko' Visser wrote a score inspired by the work and life of the late Hungarian/Yugoslav composer, ethnomusicologist and instrument builder Ernö Kiràly. Initiated and organised by Visser, and hosted by Klangendum, this event premieres four different performances of the score by various artists/composers that formed new groups for this occasion.

With
his "bio-graphical" score, Hans Visser tries to encapsulate and reinterpret Ernö Király's world by means of linocut prints and poetry, which are accompanied by compositional guidelines for the music of "Kemenymadar/Asvogel in Orgelpark". The score is linked to themes of war and resilience during war time, as well as the sharing of responsibility and freedom alike, through composing and playing music.

about Ernö Kiràly:

Composer and ethnomusicologist Ernö Kiràly (1919, Subotica, Kingdom of Yugoslavia - 2007, Novi Sad, Serbia) had a strong interest in folk music, improvisation, instrument building, unconventional tunings and graphic scores. In regard to his composition style, his creative method had more in common with the American avant-garde (improvisation, instrument building, composer-performer, and multi-instrumentalism) than with the dogmatically rigid European compositional practice.
He started focussing on ethnomusicology, which was the decisive factor in his career, in the 1950s, when he began collecting the vocal and instrumental music of the people of the Vojvodina region (the autonomous, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural province that occupies the northernmost part of Serbia and which is inhabited by predominantly Hungarians, Serbs, Croats, Slovaks, and Romani) and its folk instruments (zithers, drums, flutes and fifes). He collected over 3000 folk songs and published many books documenting them

about Hans Visser:
Hans Visser (Vriezenveen, 1966), plays and writes. He is best known for his work in Plan Kruutntoone, an international band/ensemble, on the edge between composed and improvised music. Visser also writes autonomous work and music for film and theater.
