Asmus Tietchens is a living legend of German electronic avant-garde music and we're honoured to have him as our guest at our 80th edition. His elusive music has been often lumped in into lazy genre categorizations in an attempt to contextualize his body of work, but in Tietchens' opinion music should be no more than itself. He is a purveyor of absolute music and most of his pieces can be interpreted as results of formalistic exercises, designed for an audience who insist on more than easy listening. Bluntaxe is a Dutch five-piece who will perform a live set where concrete poetry and sound meet. Tietchens' set will be complemented with a DJ set from DJ Zipo.

┆ASMUS TIETCHENS┆de
Asmus Tietchens (1947) is one of the most important and unique figures in non-academic electronic music and sound manipulation. The Hamburg-based composer has made more than 80 albums worldwide and has collaborated with many different sound artists. His music draws on various musical genres; electronic (both high and low-brow), minimalism and classic. In 1980 he released his first solo album "Nachtstücke", followed by a series of albums containing rhythmic and harmonic music for the renowned Sky label ("Biotop", "Spät Europa", etc.). These fairly melodic synth tunes almost seem an abberation in light of the later shift towards 'industrial', as first witnessed on "Formen Letzter Hausmusik" (1984, United Diaries) and the meticulous sound manipulations he is known for today. Tietchens continues to explore the posibilities of specific sound sources (ranging from water sounds to pure sine wave tones). His work is rooted in a deeply sceptic gesture and inspired by philosopher E.M. Cioran, who is often quoted on his album covers. Tietchens has been awarded with the prestigious Karl Sczuka Prize of the Südwestrundfunk (SWR) twice.

┆BLUNTAXE┆nl
Bluntaxe is a group centered around the concrete poetry of ACG Vianen. The sounds and words by Vianen are complemented by a combination of bass (Jan Vanderlest), drums (Rik van Iersel), guitar (Jacq Palinckx) and saxophone/electronica (Edward Capel). Bluntaxe was created from a series of monthly instant composing events at TAC in Eindhoven, providing exciting encounters between of words and music. Artists brought what they had in common; the freedom of sound art.

┆DJ ZIPO┆de / aufabwegen
Zipo aka Till Kniola will play a DJ set that contains electronic bricolage and field recordings. He is the main editor of Aufabwegen; a magazine, label and mailorder that ranks as one of the most comprehensive, long-running underground publications in Germany, covering all things Post-Industrial, Ambient and Noise. Aufabwegen published a monography on Asmus Tietchens in 1998, alongside a number of CD releases. Till curates sound events in Cologne and is the artistic director of the 'Geraüschwelten Festival' in Münster, Germany, which is co-produced with Radio WDR 3.
