■ SINTA RUQYAY YUYANA aka TOMÁS TELLO (pe)
Tomás Tello is a Peruvian sound artist who currently lives in Luxembourg. His work is deeply inspired by ancient forms of music and environmental sounds. He is interested in the qualities of multiplicity in musicianship, using a varied set of instruments that include D.I.Y. electronics, walkmans, guitars, samplers, flutes, bells, etc. A close relationship with the sounds that surround us is a key element in his material. Tomás also runs the highly interesting Andesground tape label.

■ BEEQUEEN (nl)
In the fickle world of pop music Beequeen forms an extraordinary beacon. Their fragile sound balances on the fine thread that links experiment with pop. The result is 26 years of surreal dream-pop, documented on over twenty albums. Beequeen's core has essentially been Frans de Waard and Freek Kinkelaar since 1988. The duo added singer Olga Wallis to the line-up in 2007, her warm and intimate voice being the perfect icing on the cake. This evening the band will be performing as a four-piece.

VROOOM #23

with:
- ANDY MOOR (uk) & YANNIS KYRIAKIDES (gr)
- DANIEL LEVIN (us) & MAT MANERI (us)
- NYRD - FRISO VAN WIJCK (nl)

It's hard not to brag about this VROOOM line up; the adventurous string sounds of jazz/improv greats Daniel Levin and Mat Maneri (duo set), the disparate rebetiko experimentalism from Andy Moor and Yannis Kyriakides, and the premiere of Friso van Wijck's electronica tape piece, we kid you not, it's all great stuff!

■ ANDY MOOR (uk) & YANNIS KYRIAKIDES (gr)
Yannis Kyriakides (electronics) and Andy Moor (guitar / The Ex) lovingly dis- and reassemble Rebetika in their unique live set. The duo's original take on this powerful early 20th century Greek "blues" encompasses a wide scope of musical vision. Andy's guitar playing is layered on top of a sonic backdrop of scratchy old Rebetika record samples and electronics supplied by Kyriakides. The dope induced haze of bouzoukis, the distant wail of this Greek urban folk, and the contemporary influences will most definitely mesmerize you.

■ MAT MANERI (us)
During his twenty-five year career, Mat Maneri has defined the voice of the viola and violin in jazz and improvised music. The Brooklyn born musician is widely praised for his original mix of jazz and microtonal music. His work as an improviser is informed by a vast knowledge of baroque violin music and chamber music, that continues to shape his approach to solo and ensemble improvisation. Maneri has worked with 20th century icons such as Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, Paul Motian, William Parker, etc.

■ DANIEL LEVIN (us)
Daniel Levin from Burlington, Vermont is a cellist, improviser and composer. His physical approach to his instrument has earned him many praise. Levin occupies a musical space bordered by many kinds of music, but fully defined by none of them. Elements of European classical music, American jazz, microtonal and new music, and European free improv all figure prominently in his unique sound. At Vrooom, Levin will be linking his cello wizardry to the violin/viola sounds of Mat Maneri in a duo set.

■ 'NYRD' – FRISO VAN WIJCK (Rotterdam)
The premiere of Friso van Wijck's new electronica tape piece entitled 'Nyrd'. This meticulous composition by the renowned drummer/composer is partly about large gestures that nevertheless contain a lot of detail and movement. Picture a moment of impact, a gazillion small sound particles giving way to (as) many contrapuntal possibilities, eventually resulting in -or interrupted by- another collision... a search for a new musical form.
